  • We're responsible for your library book?

    Okay, this is a first.

A customer came to the desk with his kid. Says he's missing a library book in the store. And that i'm responsible for it. (understand that i'm working in a BOOKSTORE, not a LIBRARY.

Search turned up nothing, and I regretfully take his info and promise to call him if we find it. He pushes the point that the store is responsible for his son's lost library book I then proceed to call the library seeing that they do buy books from us, and tell them about it. The Librarian laughed and made a note in the computer about the patron and the book. Tells me that it's HIS responsibility (seeing the kid is under 18) and she'll keep me informed of the situation if it escalates.

        Umm, no.

As I recalled the agreement you sign when you get your library card, *you* are responsible. AND IIRC, the adult is responsible for teh kid's books.

Of course, this begs teh question of why they brought a library book to a bookstore?!?!?!

I'm rather curious about that myself; did the kid PLAN on leaving a library book in a book store? I'll bet someone purchased it or it's a flat out lie.

          My money's on the lie.

Nope, the Librarian told me it would be hard for the bookstore to sell the book.

#1. It's a hardcover of a series we virtually sell exclusively in paperback form.
#2. It has enough stickers slapped onto it to make a ricer cry in shame.
#3. Strip of paper on the inside cover.

Oh, I've gotten this LOTS of times! And I've heard every excuse in the book:

But, we thought we returned it! (I checked and it's not on our shelves.)

But, we never borrowed that! (Um ... we don't arbitrarily check things out on random library cards. There's no way it can get checked out on your library card unless you or someone with your card brought it to the Circulation Desk and checked it out.)

But, I never even read it! (So? Either return it or pay for it.)

But, I think I left it at the...! (As long as it's checked out on your card, it's your responsibility.)

But, I didn't like it! (So? Either return it or pay for it.)

But, my spouse/friend said they'd return it for me! (Then it's time you called them and asked them about it, dontcha think?)

              But, but, but, but, but!!!!!eleventy!!!!!!

People usually pay up when they find out they can't use their library card to get on the internets and get that all-important email that's got to be checked.

If it's checked out on your card, YOU are responsible for it. If it's checked out on your child's card and you are the listed parent/guardian, YOU are responsible for it. I don't care WHERE you left/lost it ... either find it and return it or pay for it ... end of discussion.

I really don't know why people have a problem with responsibility. I figure, though, in the future that the baby will figure it's not his responsibility to take care of his parents. Because it's always someone elses responsibility.

At the library I also hear a bunch of excuses, mostly "I didn't check out that book." There is this one loser who spends all day at the library using mulitple cards (you are only suppose to have one card, either the library card or a computer use only card. He had multiple computer use only cards, mostly because you can request them without id, so there's a bunch with aliases). I call him a loser because he lies. He lies that he didn't log on to a computer, that somone got up and he used the computer. And I wasn't sure of his age, but he was making out with a M.S. student in the library one day. Then a month latter he says he's over 18 so he could use the meeting room for a party for a student. How nasty is that a guy is over 4 years older than a girl and makes out with her when she's underage?

Anyway, he checked out about $300 or $500 worth of material (mostly DVDs) then he never returned them. His excuse is "My dad went to San Angelo with them." Uh, then you get dad to return them or pay for them. Though I'm pretty sure the ass is lying.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

I once made this excuse to a librarian. She reacted with polite disbelief. But I knew I had returned it, so I had her check the shelves. And she found it there, still checked out to me. The look on her face was absolutely priceless!

Exactly the reason that I will immediately offer and do a shelf-check for every patron that is sure they returned an item. When I find it, I apologize for our error and check the item in Exempt Fines.

But, finding the item on the shelf is not what usually happens. And after I check the shelves and return to the patron empty-handed, then they go, oh, wait ... maybe I didn't return THAT one. *sigh* I will then print out the information and advise them to check at home and to contact me at the library if they DON'T find it. Depending on the situation (and their attitude), I can always change the item's status to Claim Returned. They usually never call me, and the item usually shows up in the overnight book drop the next morning.

Actually, I just had one person last week that INSISTED that approximately 10 items (on 3 different cards) were returned. Shelf check turned up nothing, but she was SO sure that I Claim Returned all 10 items. Sure enough, she showed up yesterday with all of them, which were found on the bottom of her closet. I charged her the overdue fines for every item.

That actually happened to me twice last year. Fortunately, the online catalog means that I can (and did) check the status from home and discover the problem before the due date. (If I drop off three items at once, two of them leave my list the next day, and the third one is still checked out to me three days later, it's time to check the shelf.) The first time, I checked the shelf myself to find it and took it over to the counter to get it properly checked in (since that branch has the theft sensor between the shelves and the book drop). The second time, I called about twenty minutes before they closed for the day, and the librarian found it on the shelf.

                        *facepalm* Oy......

uh-oh! We must do lots of important and expensive research to find a cure for this new late onset form of Down's Syndrome!

Tough shit on SC and junior for losing the library book, but they'll be expecting a fine from the library sometime for that. WTH is it with people thinking that they shouldn't have to be held responsible for their own stuff?!!

I've had that happen occasionally, mostly with interlibrary loans. Which means I can wait for several weeks while the book makes its way across state and gets checked in at home. And even then, I had to argue one time to get the fines lifted.
