As you know, two nights ago was Call of Duty launch day.
It's one of the biggest launches we do all year. We had around 200 people show up. We usually process the sales transaction through the register prior to midnight, then after the game officially releases, we just hand customers the game and they're out the door.
In order to keep this orderly, my manager decided that we'd handle things in groups so as we processed transactions before midnight we marked receipts with a 1,2,3 or 4, the order of which was determined by how far back you were in the line when we started the process.
Well, my genius coworker decides to write a 1 on the receipt of a friend of his who should rightfully been in group 3. Another customer outside notices this friend cutting into the line with the rest of the "1s" and comes back in to the store to complain...
SC: I want to be moved into group 1, NOW.
Me: Excuse me??
SC: I saw a guy who came out a few minutes AFTER I did go into group 1. If you can do it for him, you can do it for me.
Me: We closed off group 1 awhile ago, I can't just put someone in there because they want to be. (note: at this time I did not know about my coworkers actions)
SC: Yes you can!
Me: No, we can't.
SC: Yes, you CAN!
Me: No, we can't. Look in all likelihood we'll have all the groups processed by no later than 12:20 am. That means you won't be waiting too long no matter what group you're in.
SC: Unacceptable. I want to be in group 1!
Me: I can't do that.
SC: Yes, you can!
(Didn't we just do this???...
Me: Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to step aside, we have people in line and--
SC: Get me your manager!
So I call over my manager who eventually convinces the SC that he's stuck in group 3 no matter what and if he doesn't like that, tough.
He did lightly scold my coworker for moving his friend up.
The stupid thing is that my manager and I agreed we probably would have been willing to move the guy up if he hadn't been such a jerk about it.
