  • I refuse your logic, that man is a THIEF!!

In the mornings at my mall we get a lot of elderly people who walk laps for exercise. Many of them are difficult, entitled and rude. They don't want to carry their coats/hats/scarves/umbrellas so they'll leave them on signs, benches, display tables, etc. In the past several years, may coats have gone missing because, well, they've just been left alone.

A gentleman was at the mall for an interview with our security supervisor. He hadn't been to the mall before and wasn't sure where the office was so he was walking around. (he had his file, certificates, resume, etc.) He found a coat left on a bench and picked it up so he could turn it in to security (he couldn't know how people just leave their coats around here).

Well, miss elderly mall walker sees this well-intentioned gentleman with her coat and FLIPPED HER SHIT, chasing him, actually calling the police, and so on while he tried to explain he was trying to bring it to lost and found. No, she wasn't having it, he was obviously a THEIF! The Security Supervisor arrived by this time and tried to explain to the old bat that if the gentleman was trying to steal her coat, why would be be walking the mall LOOKING for security? She made the police come anyway. the police refused to do a report because there was no crime. This pissed her off even more. Luckily she finally left and the gentleman was able to get his interview. What a first impression!

Did I mention that in addition to their rudeness and entitlement that a LOT of these mall walkers are racist? Security supervisor believes she was after the gentleman simply because he was of a certain ethnicity of spanish origins.

In any case, the mall walkers are fast cooling their welcome at the mall and corporate may decided to cancel the mall walking program all together. They bring no money in and are a liability when they sneak into the mall early while housekeeping is still mopping floors.

People like that only wind up costing the mall money, never spending, driving other customers away, and the clear potential for a slip and fall lawsuit because they can't follow the damn rules. Clear 'em out.

Yeah, we get at least one fall a month, usually someone who does not want to admit that they need a cane or walker. And there's one guy that in 3-years we've called an ambulance for him 8 TIMES because he keeps having heart trouble while walking.

I don't mind that she got upset when someone made off with her coat, but once it was explained that the guy was just taking the coat to security, she should have clamed down. LIke she never heard about a good Samaritan.

That happened a lot at the library; people leave their stuff behind while they spend 3 hours on the computer/go out to eat, security picks up their stuff, and they are pissed about it. Watch your stuff! Then there are times their stuff does get stolen and they come every day for a week thinking it might show up at security

OT, but I remember at a mall in Houston, they were adding a theater to it. Unfortunately during construction a wall fell on some early morning mall walkers and killed a few.

In addition, what gives her the mindset that she can just leave a personal item somewhere and it will still be there whenever she returns to the area? I would hope that security would advise her that if she leaves something there again that there's a positive guarantee that IT WON'T be there when she gets back. That'll teach her personal responsibility.

The woman was lucky nobody DID steal her coat >_> It would have been her own fault for leaving it unattended

Oh, we've TOLD them. If anyone asks me 'will my coat be ok there?' I tell them that I would not recommend leaving anything unattended because nobody will be there to watch it. They then accuse us of admitting that our mall is 'unsafe.' Well, it will be unsafe if we have to waste manpower watching your crap instead of watching for safety issues!

Our mall walkers have always been trouble for me. And they wonder why I hate opening. Maybe it's because instead of walking, they sit and drink our coffee for 3 hours. Mall walkers, my foot.

We must be lucky then. The mall walkers down at the not so local shopping centre are generally well behaved. I've seen then walking around (the mall is open from 6am because of the supermarket) and they just chat amongst themselves, looking like a group. They even have polo shirts.

I like using the mall for exercise, because it's flat-floored and air conditioned. We also do most of our grocery shopping there, as well as a fair chunk of other shopping, so I guess we're paying for the resource as well.

That said, I try to combine my exercise with errands; or at least with trips to the food court for a treat!

my mom use to walk the mall back in our hometown. there were enough seniors doing it that the mall actually opened a couple of hours early, although no stores were open yet. then again, this was also in a rather cold area in the winter so... it was easier to go to the mall vs go walking down the road etc. in the snow.

these days tho mom usually just walks outside or at her favorite park, if the weather is conducive to it. but... she never left her coat lying around even when she did use the mall. she would have been too concerned about it being taken.

I have been known to mall walk myself, except that I usually combine it with an excuse of some kind. For example, a shopping centre near my house has a library nearby. I might use the excuse of visiting the library to mall walk afterwards. Usually when the shops are open of course!

When I worked at the Ghetto Mall, our early morning mall walkers were ruthless. The mall opened its doors an hour early to let them in. You'd see them swarm the doors! And then they just walked like they owned the place. Once, I had come in early to clean the glass in front of the store, and several mall walkers refused to walk around me, walked in to me and knocked me over!
