Note: this is not a place for discussing the benefits/drawbacks of elections or voting systems around the world.
So today my partner and I went and voted. The way that it works over here in Ausland is that when you go and vote, you give them your name and address and the person behind the counter crosses your name off by putting a line through your record in their giant book before you get handed your ballot papers.
While we're waiting for the guy to check our names off, I notice that the ruler they were using to cross the names off was stamped "AEC Certified List Ruler", complete with instructions on how to use it. (This is what it looks like)
My first thoughts were: 1) Why does it need to be certified and 2) who actually certified it?!
