My Dream World Vulpix in Pokémon Black is named "Mitsune;" how's that? *runs* I honestly can't remember if I grabbed that from Love Hina or Fruits Basket, though, since I know little about both.

Honestly, I can think of kanji that will go with it, but it may be awkward as an actual name.

Re: naming conventions in fanfic etc.

I'll admit, I love coming up with character names, but I try to do what I can to adhere to naming conventions if I know them. That said, I know next to nothing about Japanese naming conventions, so I tend to fall into As Long As It Sounds Foreign many times.

The rest of the time, I tend toward Meaningful Names many times as well. In a sci-fi story I'm writing, a hard-line unionist warship captain who mercilessly kills anyone he suspects of being a seditionist/separatist (and is one of the villains, needless to say) is named Nathaniel Malleus, specifically to evoke up "witch-hunter" comparisons.

It makes me think of the sound of waves going back and forth in an inlet or harbor.

Kitsune, for a fox character? Too overused, too uncreative. It literally means "fox", which in east asian culture, has a lost mysticism behind it with legends and such.

It gets old, since I am around a lot of anime fans, manga artists, etc...and half of them at one point has a fox-character with that name. >.o;

Kireii or kirei work in romaji.

Yeah, that is how I think of it as well, but its still a bit awkward maybe...however a quick check with my friend said it could still work. (he is japanese)

Edit; And talking to another friend from Northen Japan about it....its not a good name for them...considering the tsunami...xD

Researching names often comes up with fun things. ^^ I know a couple in a literary society, Adrian and Natasha. Adrian is Roman and comes from the same root as Hadrian's Wall and the Adriatic Sea; Natasha, here's the fun bit, is the diminutive of Natalya, which is the Russian form of Natalie, which means 'born on Christmas Day'...she wasn't, but Natalie was the wife of the 4th Century Saint Adrian of Nicomedia.

Lovelovelove Behind The Name. :3 It's my go-to place for when I need a name for one of my characters. I can spend an hour looking through the Themes section alone.

And, yeah, naming a fox character 'Kitsune' is like naming a dragon character 'Draco'.

Writers don't write stories. Stories enslave writers to turn themselves into reality.

So true! I am not a writer or an artist but my sister and close friends are and their characters will rewrite the entire plot of their books. One character insisted that she had a boyfriend during the time the story focused on her sister and refused to do anything else until my friend wrote that in. Don't you tell me they aren't real I have to deal with the poor abused authors!

My characters run away with themselves too... after taking my Big Bad down several pegs, nothing post that would work unless I turned him coporeal again and let him have kids with the main characters' mentor character... yeah.

Oh god...the novel I've been working on for years...needs yet ANOTHER rewrite because the main character's best friend decided HE needed to be the main character. Which...works, because my original MC was way too passive and this guy's all about taking action.
