I don't think I'd be able to contain my snark if I was in a book store ( especially one stocking manga ). There seems to be an fantastical amount of stupidity that occurs there. To be honest just going to Chapters ticks me off with teens sprawled out in the aisles reading crap. Always the manga section too and always the most insufferable of titles. <cough> Inuyasha <cough>. ( Gawdzilla DID sum it up nicely. )
NANA on the other hand I love. Fantastic series. But I'm weak vs that kind of older shoujo/drama/slice of life stuff. Which is funny because I can't STAND anything supposedly "romantic" produced in North America. Love it in anime/manga form. Hate any kind of "romantic" movie/show made over here.
Manga/anime is kind of funny in that in Japan its considered an acceptable medium for ANY type of story/material. Where as over here the mentality is still that anything animated is for kids and anything drawn is just another comic book.

My local manga stops (Borders and B&N) aren't too overrun with posers and wannabes. It's not as bad as it was back in the day when the only place I could find anime/manga was at Suncoast and they were in a secluded, musty corner in the back of the store. And the guy behind the counter was always like the Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons. I think that was a job requirement there..."You are loved" - Plaidman.

One of my friends says this of InuYasha:
"I liked it more when it was called Fushigi Yugi."
Personally, I stopped watching IY around episode 100, round about when they had to reforge the Tetsuiaga.
Yes, I'm an anime otaku. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to PM me. I can help you find a series you might enjoy, or may not have heard of.Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

Actually, Iny Yasha wasn't so bad at the beginning, but it suffers from the same problem that most other Takahashi titles suffers from. She starts it off strong, then starts adding too many characters, then gets bored and leaves and the story gets taken over by ghostwriters until the ratings drop enough that it's no longer making a profit. The best things she's done are the one shot stories that are completely self-contained, and Maison Ikkoku, which has a definite ending and was set before she started.
Some series that I particularly enjoy include:
Bleach - the story moves, there is a defined plot with a definite direction, but there's a lot of fighting, so it's a bit bloody at times.
Hikaru no Go - it's the story of a boy who gets possessed by the ghost of a Haian era Go instructor who committed suicide after being framed for cheating. the strength of this one is in the characters.
Hunter x Hunter - if you pay attention, it's another variation on the Monkey King theme (young male protagonist, naive, loyal to his friends/partners, never gives up, eats a lot, fishing rod in place of extending staff). this book is can also be pretty violent at times.

And I reiterate that I actually like Inuyasha. But I can see why others don't, and I'm certainly not about to push my opinions on others. There are other shows/manga that other people love that I just don't get (Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are two of them).
I certainly hope my kids never get the idea that it's okay to unwrap merchandise they haven't even paid for yet (let alone aren't planning to pay for). A bookstore is still a store, not a library. I believe in buying my books first, then going to find one of the comfy chairs to read in. And I don't block the aisle."Enough expository banter. It's time we fight like men. And ladies. And ladies who dress like men. For Gilgamesh...IT'S MORPHING TIME!"

Ah eva and cowboy bebop.
Eva is really wierd. Takes a few watches to get the hang of.
If you watch cowboy bebop, trust me watch the english version. It's localized beautifuly. The voices are perfect and the acting is great. I've seen the subbed version and it just didn't make any sense. Defenitly see the english version.

I never got the love triangle thing. "Hmm, do I want to be with the reanimated corpse of my dead lover, or with her descendant from 500 years in the future who looks exactly like her and has a pulse?"

As I said recently about the girl my glands liked a bit too much a while back, she's not the most attractive person, though hardly tough on the eyes. She's not the most devastatingly intelligent, though she more than knows what she's doing and is a great artist. I don't know what she has, but it worked.

Quoth Dreamstalker View PostGah. The bf tried to get me into that once (specifically, fan-done IY porn...yes, that does exist. I'm not sure whether to be surprised or not).
They peeled out so fast after I caught them, they actually helped clean the carpet of embedded dirt.

Quoth Aldous View PostHey Gawdzillas, show a little respect, not all manga is that bad. Some of them are actually quite good. Now in respects to the shrink wrap, I bought every issue of Battle Royale, an adult only manga, all of them shrink wrapped for obvious reasons, you can't turn a page without graphic violence, language, or sex. Great story behind it too. I'd get pissed whenever I saw my tome unwrapped, and some kid thinking that it had to do with wrestling. Nevermind the brats reading the back, or even looking at the cover which usually depicts a weapon."Time shall help me face my painful memories with indifference, and with more of it, I won't feel the need to face them at all..."
