  • Fire Alarms

Last month the lady who does samples in our store set off the fire alarm. How is this possible. She does not work for us but from a company that does in-store demos. She is also an environmentalist who will save everything. She will save cardboard cardboard boxes, instead of throwing them in the bailer to be recycled. Last week I found out that she was suspended form the company/vendor for wiping off plastic forks/spoons that customers sampled with and threw in the trash to re-use them. The GM caught her, called the vendor who told the lady she was to leave the store with only her personal stuff. we filled one who trash can of crap for her cart when we cleaned it.

As part of her save everything routine, she wrapped food in aluminum foil and put in in a non-microwave safe container, put it in the break room microwave, set of for about 5min and walked away. The plastic melted and the sparks ignited the container, which ignited the interior of the microwave. The smoke was sucked into the HVAC which set off a duct smoke. When the alarm wet off loud horns went off, strobes flashed, automatic announcements wet off saying "this is an emergency evacuate the building" the MOD made PA announcements to to tell the dumb customers where the exits were, leave carts behind and for associated to escort customers out as we left. I stayed longer to get customers out (the blgd is steel w/100% sprinkler coverage and fire walls and doors) if i though the was a major danger I would have let the fend for them selves. Such as if all the light wet off smoke pouring from vents, etc. So at least a half a dozen customers wouldn't budge because they needed that box of spaghetti, ice cream, etc. I finally waited by the doors watching as customers wondered the store and even waited at the now abandoned registers. The FEM had run around pulling the money out but leaving the drawers open causing th registers to make the loud beeping sound saying the drawer is open. They finally left when they smelt smoke or the FF's and PD forced them out. Since the store smelt like smoke we kept them outside for about an hour and a half while the FD ventilated the place. We used the HVAC to exhaust the stale air and bring in 100% new air. The doors were locked with sign saying "do to a fire the store will be closed until further notice." Customers still tried to open the doors, despite the fire truck parked in front with lights flashing. There is a competitor across the street if they needed their things that badly.

I sincerely hope management will have a talk with her boss and her suspension will turn into her unemployment.

She used to be in one a week, usually weekends and I have not seen her since she was suspended. We all hated her because she treated the store employees like crap. She would ask us to do stuff for her the she knew how to do. She would even ask us to get the rolling ladder to reach the items she had to demo, because she needed to see the "whole picture" about the item. Like how they were stocked from 8ft up(a "top" view), from the side, etc We never did.
