  • That Battery is Too Much!!! And other AutoZone War Stories.

This is just a recollection of an incident when I worked at AutoZone. For a brief, dark period of my life, I moved to a little craphole in the world known as Ripley, TN. I have since moved back to my beloved home state, but this will forever haunt me.

A man comes in with his mother. He tells me he has a 1997 Cavalier that will not start because it needs a new battery. Now I point out to him all our options, why each one is better then the others. The uber cheap ValuCraft, the decent Duralast and the current top battery on the market Duralast Gold. Of course, he dismisses the too better batteries and ponders the price on the ValuCraft for awhile (ok, I am use to this, people are cheap and think that a battery is all the same, oh well, I won't stop to jump you later this year.). He then asks if we have anything cheaper. I do my usual, are you fricking nuts, look at him and then sigh slowly, as we do have our EconoCraft line which comes with a 90 day warranty (and rightfully so) for 38.99.

At this point I am expecting him to take that, but to my utter shock and disdain, he tells me this too is too expensive. That he will just have to come back another time.

Ok so, maybe he is poor, whatever. I say ok, thank him for coming and go to tend the register. About 10 minutes later, guess who shows up at my register. That''s right, Mr. Cheapo himself. And what does he have with him (besides his mother), but a set of 14 inch, faux chrome spinner hub caps for 49.99 a set. Two rolls of mirror tint at 14.99 a piece. Kind of shocked, and not thinking I say to him in a joking, but saracastic fashion:

"Hey I guess if it is going to sit there all the time not running it can look good."

Expecting that I had just cost me my job, he shocks me even more.

    "I know right!"

Then he turns to his mom and says, I will just get some chick to buy me a battery then dump her.

    ---

    Enter dumb individual.

Asks me for the price on an alternator for his Ford Explorer. Give him the price (and Ford has some cheap alternators). He thanks me and says he will come back in a day or two to get it. Cool great customer, right?

    WRONG.

20 minutes late, he calls me. His question. Can I use the alternator off a 1991 Escort on my 1999 Ford Explorer. Um. Ok at this point I want to point out how stupid a question this is, but I tell him he cannot. He says ok and hangs up.

A couple of hours later. A call. "Ok so I took the alternator off my Escort and am trying to put it on my Explorer, but they don't match. How can I conver this to work.

"Sir you cannot convert this to work, the amperage on your Explorer's alternator is higher then that on the Escort. On top of that the wire input is different, and the mounting bracket will not line up."

Thinking that there is no argument he can put up now, and I was right, comes the next stupid comment.

"You don't know a damn thing about cars." <Click>

Two days later, guess who bought an alternator for his Explorer.

    ---

    The complete idiot.

A customer calls up one day asking if he can use his idler pulley from a 3.1 on a 3.8. I tell him he cannot and provide him a price. He grunts and hangs up.

Ten minutes later he calls back, and then asks me who else is working. I tell them Carla and he goes let me talk to her. I don't want to talk to you. Ok.

So I get her and she gets the exact same question and comes to me for my expertise, loud enough for him to hear. I tell her the same answer and pull off the two parts from the shelf and show her the difference. She gives him his response. He hangs up angry.

Now for the next couple of weeks this guy calls up and hangs up or prank calls if I pick up the phone. After awhile when he calls up I call him on it. I tell him to stop acting childish, I know cars and can answer his questions. He angrily hangs up.

Two minutes later he calls back, deciding to be a funny guy. He asks me how much a radiator would cost for a 1969 VW Beetle. In a heartbeat I tell him without even looking it up. Nothing. Acting all smug he then goes, well what about a water pump. Nothing sir. He thinks he has me at this point. He goes "I know you sell parts for that car, I checked already with someone else." In that I got you tone.

At which point I smile to myself, smug, and without breaking a stride:

"That we do sir. But we do not sell radiators or water pumps for 1969 VW Beetles because they don't have them. If you knew cars you would know that."

    Been there, done that...

I had a guy in my shop who INSISTED his spark plug wires were the culprit of his major ignition problems. You can just imagine how utterly thrilled I was to inform him he had a plug to coil setup... NO ignition wires.

Rule #1: If you're not an automotive technician, don't pretend to be one.

Rule #2: Don't be surprised that new spark plugs don't fix your car when you've needed a new ignition coil for two years.

That sounds like an item for a wild goose chase, a water pump for a '69 V.W. bug.

Sadly, I knew a guy like this in high school. He put all his time, money, and effort into tricking out his 85 Mustang and boy, it sure did look pretty sitting on the side of the road. After that car, he got a truck - nice, big, gigantic truck that he dumped all sorts of money in and when his money ran out - he had a girlfriend who dumped in about $2,000 + of her own money - then they broke up and she chased him until the cows came home trying to get her money back!

I guess I'm kinda car-battery ignorant. I bought the cheapest compatible battery for my '94 Astro at Wal-Mart two years ago. I've had to exchange it three times, and about ready to exchange it again, because my van keeps sucking the life out of them. If I have to take it back again I'm just gonna ask them if I can get a credit toward a much stronger battery.

I've got those duralast golds in both my van and my truck. Dang good batteries. I threw an alternator belt on my van on the indiana side of cincy and didnt notice until i got home. I ran all the way home on the battery in a 90 3/4 ton ram van with cb and radio on. Very good quality I would say. The only thing better IMO is an Optima battery. I used to have one in my old truck and that thing never died no matter how much load I threw on it.

And I cannot tell you how many of those Ricers I've seen at the dealership. Spend several grand on making a 500$ car look cool. If the radio doubles the value of the car then maybe you have your priorities a bit confused.

I have noticed that the walmart batteries are ok for a small car but in something bigger they are not too great.

I feel for you auto parts store people. It seems as if every one i've been in was on their busiest day of the year when they were desparately short handed. Not only do you have to ring up long lines of people but you are also called on to give out advice people should be paying a mechanic for AND the phones ring off the hook with no end in sight.

No way. Don't want. I'll stay at my hotel with my overflowing toilets thank you very much.

Get the yellow MAXX batteries. They have a 3 year warranty. Unless your car is a junker and you are selling it in 6 months you are much better off with the better battieries. The cheaper ones don't have the cranking amps of the more expencive ones. It is -26 F where I live and you WILL notice the difference when you try and turn over the engine.

Down south, not only do they expect the free advice, but they expect you to give free labor and do the work for them in many cases. Now remember down south, trucks and cars and the maintenance required on them is more do-it-yourself because of the lack of reliable mechanics and money. So the quality of AutoZoner down south is better then up north, but we still make crap wages and no hazard pay and most of the time while not said, you can tell the company expects you to be doing these repairs.

The worse part is a lady comes in and buys a headlight. You put it in for her. She drives off only to come back a few days later.

"My transmission has been acting up ever since you put that bulb in. What do you do to my car and you need to fix it now."

No matter how much you try to explain to this woman that the two are in no way interchangeable. She still won't believe you, with her mechanical ignorance she thinks that if you do one thing unrelated wrong it can effect anything in the car. More or less she needs an excuse and a fall guy for the expensive repair. Which she obviously doesn't get. Threatens lawsuit, then comes back a month later with some humility.

                      --

As for batteries. You don't need to buy the top of the line one to get a good battery. The top of the line is actually better, it is not just a sales pitch. They have higher cranking amps, cold cranking amps and life on them as well as a really nice warranty (Duralast Gold 3 Year Free Replacement, 5 Year Pro-Rata Return.)

But the regular Durlast line will work really well if you need to save the few extra bucks and comes with a very comparable warranty as well. Instead of 3 years, it is 2 years, same 5 year pro-rata.

But when you start to dip in the economy batteries. You get what you paid for. If you are selling the car soon, that's one thing. But damn, I don't want to hear you bitching a year from now when you stil have that car and the battery is no good.

Things with cars are different. Unlike clothes and food, which sometimes the more expensive is really no better, you are just paying for brand. The car parts quality is usually reflective of it's prive. And if you buy remanufactured parts, specifically water pumps, my pet peeve, you aren't being smart.

Wow. Looks like pretty much any profession that deals with working with the public has its own share of "armchair quarterbacks" to make their work so much "easier". You think that's bad become a teacher or a cop. You'll have so many armchair QB's all over your ass you'll wonder what the point was in pissing away all that time and money on "education"since it's all you really need is a Lazy-Boy armchair and a TV/radio to make judgements.
