  • Wherein the Air Conditioning Hates Technology

So long story short, the building burst a coolant pipe and dumped 40-50 gallons of antifreeze right in my office. Destroyed my desk (and most of what was on it), 30+ monitors, several printers, at least 3 fax machines, and an unknown amount of other stuff that has been sent out to be cleaned and possibly recovered.

This includes my work PC (which I had just gotten to where I wanted after upgrading to Windows 7, dangit!), radio, two books I had in my bag, my PS Vita, and my 3DS. I have hopes of recovering all but the books (soaked, total loss), radio (right under the deluge, and a wood casing), and maybe the PC (also heavily hit, but metal and no up-faced vents) once they all come back from cleaning.

They also evacuated the building until it got cleaned up, and ended up sending everyone home early. The cleanup company that was called is doing a good job, and got a good amount of the mess up, but is concerned about the chemicals seeping into the concrete under our carpet.

On the upside, the only office they had open for me to move into was a corner office, so I went from no windows to four...temporarily at least.

Commiserations on the bad day at work. How fast d'you think the office-politics folk starting moaning about you having a corner office? :-)

I'd be mega ultra peeved at the loss of the 3DS. I just found one with an older firmware version at a hole in the wall Toy's R Us, and having to find another at the right version again would drive me nuts.

Heh, we don't have enough upper management to politic right now. My boss actually answers directly to the temporary CEO until they fill some positions. A bit a financial skullduggery mixed with a shakeup of the sitting board members has led to a spate of "resignations" to "pursue other opportunities" in senior management this year, leaving only one VP who is acting as CEO for now. She's good people, at least, so there's that.

Did get some bad news today. The cleaning folks came back for a second scrubbing, and told me the computer case was partially filled. liquid coolant actually poured out of it when they moved it. So I'll have to rebuild that, although the HDD might be saved, as it sits high in the case. I'll see when they return the stuff.

prolly for data, but I think he said he just got done tweakin' his W7, so that could be lost.

How's the 3DS and the Vita, GK?

All the data is on the servers, but it doesn't cover all the little things like tweaking windows to open in certain places/sizes, all the shortcuts, or having all the stuff in the start menu just so.

No word on my game systems. All the electronics was sent to a specialist place, so I probably won't hear about it for a bit. Work has offered to replace whatever ends up destroyed, so worst case, I lose my saves, and get to recreate them.

Like a mad scientist returned from times past or future, I call down the lightnings and with a scream of, "It's alive!" resurrect this thread for an update.

Just got the stuff back from the cleaning company. Surprisingly, most of the monitors and printers were saved. Of what we sent off to try to recover, we only lost a printer, some expanded paper trays, a stack of keyboards, my desktop computer, some surge protectors, and my personal stereo. The Vita and 3DS both work, and are recharging as I type. Ah, P4 Golden! How I've missed you! A lunch date? My pleasure!

My office is still under repair, as the consensus upon looking at the coolant pipes above it seems to be, "These pipes are shit!" Maybe a couple more weeks in my temporary digs yet. Somewhere along the line, my desk chair disappeared, so I've got a new one on order from procurement. All-in-all, it could have been a lot worse.

So long for now, I have some shadows to curb-stomp.
