  • NIIIIIIIIIIICE.....

It has been brought to my attention that the clearance swamp is opening at the stroke of Midnight Black Friday. This was apparently decided just days ago, and I didn't find out until just now, what with me being off at one of our new small-town stores helping it get set up.

I figured midnight opens would become the norm for Black Friday eventually; I just didn't expect it to happen this quickly.

I don't know what this means for my schedule that week. It might actually work out better than an overnight shift.

This month is just cram-packed with new experiences.

I am still looking for the day my pizza place is open on Thanksgiving AND Christmas. I am still surprised that we close early on Christmas Eve.

yes we do get enough phone calls on those days as reported by the people who volunteer to come in for 2 hours to do dough prep (and that now includes a MANAGER)

Our company is forcing people in some stores to work split shifts: 2 eight-hour ones.

Casinos are open 24 hours, and barring emergencies 365 days a year. Without holiday pay of any sort.

Black Friday isn't really a rush day for us, though our Asian guests tend to celebrate all their holidays with us.

And this wouldn't faze me much either, because this is practically what I was doing all year until now. Unload a truck until 8 at night and then come in at 5 the next morning.

It wouldn't surprise me if I ended up doing this. Making that schedule work will be a bear, as the store is going to be open 23 hours that day.

Midnight? Wow...and yet I'm not surprised. All about the $$$. Same reason the C-store doesn't close on Christmas. We're supposed to open at 10, but manager usually opens at 8. EVERYONE works on Christmas, and I mean everyone. Thanks to that, I have to work early Christmas Eve, make a four hour trip to my sister's house, stay the night and have our family Christmas, then drive back Christmas day to be to work at 7PM. Fun times!

I also heard that Best Buy will be opening at midnight on Black Friday.

Thanksgiving my C-Store will be open all day, and I'll be working it. We are closed on Christmas, because I don't want to work it, and I don't want to ask anyone else to do it.

I have 2 retail jobs at the moment. I have no idea how it will work logistically.

I still remember back at BoutiqueGrocery (~18 years ago) when they had something like 75% of the staff come in over an hour early for XMAS Eve one year...and neglected to have anyone with a KEY show up to let us in. They somehow weaseled their way out of paying us for the wasted time (yes I know it's illegal) by claiming that they had made no such mass schedule change....

So they expected us to believe that 100% of the kitchen staff, most of the staff of the other departments, and most of us "peon" workers (like cashiers and baggers) spontaneously all decided to show up at 5 in the morning when it was ten below (in New Orleans, no less) and just hang out on the smelly loading dock because they felt like it...yyeeeaahhhh.

It took until sometime after six to get a Manager out of bed to come and open the doors.

I'm surprised that Random Craft Store isn't open on Christmas -- I don't think it's too far off in the future for us to be, now that we're only closed two days out of the year [Christmas and Easter]. I'm also surprised we aren't open past a certain time on Thanksgiving, not doing a 4 PM Thanksgiving until 10 PM Black Friday deal.

Although I wouldn't mind getting my Black Friday shift over with, everyone that works with me thinks I'm nuts for actually wanting to work very early that day. I say the earlier I can get it over with, the earlier I can get out.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Simple - both your managers will schedule you for the full day, and when you tell them about the scheduling conflict, both will give you the ultimatum "show up here or get fired".
