  • My father is haunting my mother.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, although I suppose we all should have expected it. The paranormal is normal in my family.

My father died two weeks ago, and according to my mother, it didn't take him long at all to come back for a visit. Twice so far, she has gone into the bathroom in the morning and found a sopping wet washcloth draped over the lip of the sink -- just as my dad would leave them after using one to wet his face before shaving in the morning. Once, while my mother was undergoing one of her dialysis treatments, she felt someone pat her knee three times. Then, while making her bed one morning, she felt a hand brush through her hair and then down her arm.

And lastly, while I was over at my mother's house yesterday, the television turned itself on.

As I said, I'm not sure how I feel about it. If he's just there to watch over her or comfort her, great. My worry though, is that he's stuck in that miserable house just like everything else that haunts it. This is a dark, gloomy house where three people have died and where nobody has ever been happy. My mother finds the house peaceful and says it feels cozy and homey, but personally, I'm afraid of the place. I don't even like being there after dark. I lived there for ten years, but only realized how ungodly creepy the place was after I moved out on my own. I guess it's true: you really can get used to anything but now, if at all possible, I avoid going out there.

Why? Because frequently you can hear what sounds like a woman in high heels pacing on the stone floor of the kitchen late at night. Because books fly off shelves -- including one that I saw travel about six or seven horizontal feet across the spare bedroom before dropping to the floor. Because there are weird shadows to be seen in there sometimes, including some that move in a very unnerving, jittery fashion.

Because the grain of the wood paneling, especially in what was my old bedroom, seems to form screaming faces. One of these faces appears to have been cleaved in half, as if by an axe. Another of these faces looks like a skull with something dark dripping upward out of the eye sockets.

Because, so far, three people have seen a woman in a white blouse and a long, old-fashioned dark skirt standing in the front yard at the end of the walk. A friend of mine saw her in the evening, the paper girl saw her at five in the morning, and one of my mother's friends saw her early one morning as he rode past the house on his way to his apple orchards up the mountain.

Because antique mirrors weighing about fifty pounds apiece have flown off the wall, crossed the room, and turned en route so that the glass was facing the wall they were hanging on. Granted, this event caused my father and I to come running to discover my mother in the throes of a hypoglycemia, but it's still unsettling.

Because on at least one occasion, the family who lived there before us came home one night to find a man sitting at the kitchen table. They looked at the man, the man looked at them wide-eyed, and then he disappeared.

Because the bedroom doors open at night as though something is peeking in, and then close themselves. Also because the front door has a nasty habit of locking itself behind you -- to the point that everybody knows to carry a key if they have to go outside for any reason. We learned that lesson the hard way after the house locked my mother outside one wet, cold winter day and she ended up very ill after sitting outside for several hours while waiting for my father to come home.

Because once while I was home alone one summer day, I heard someone coughing violently in my mother's bedroom -- the same bedroom where one of the three people who died in that house passed away from cancer.

Perhaps most of all because on most any given night you can step outside and hear from the woods that press in around the house on all sides eerie laughter, muttering, gibbering, and distant conversation you can't quite make out.

There's probably some I'm forgetting, but I've made my point. I do not like the thought of my father stuck in that awful tomb of a house. If he's there of his own accord, fine, but I can't stand the thought that he might be trapped there like God knows what all else.

From what you say, the experiences are more comforting than attempting to convey anxiety. I can't think that someone trapped would act like that.

I agree with Rapscallion. It also occurred to me that he's watching over your mother to make sure nothing happens to her. I find that very comforting; he can be there all the time for her, and she feels his presence. If he weren't there of his own accord, he might well be doing something different.

On a side note, I'm very curious about this house, and I wouldn't mind paying a visit to it. Perhaps someday, when I'm in the area, if nobody minds.

Furthermore, maybe you can get a psychic to come out to the house and contact your father to ask if he's okay and if he wants to be there. I have a strong feeling that he does, and that he knows what is happening.

I figure he's there of his own accord, but the possibility otherwise nags. Thanks for the reassurance.

Eireann -- you're welcome to visit.

Perhaps your father knows there are other presences in and around the house, and-- as Eireann said-- just wants to be sure that your mother will be all right and safe.

Is it bad that I like this story?

When it comes to the supernatural I really cut myself off. It may be the ADD & stuff constantly running in my mind, but ... for some reason I'm not skeptical just... I feel like I'm somewhat shielded from such forces.

Still, I love stories like that. And love the idea of places that are haunted.

And except for the creepy wood paneling, the house itself sounds ... sweet. Even the ghosts sound sweet.

eerie laughter, muttering, gibbering, and distant conversation you can't quite make out.
Ok not that part. Gibbering is a word that gives me fucking creeps. dunno why.

but if there's anything that actually feels evil, i'd recommend talking to a pastor about having the house cleansed.

My old church organist considered it for a while.
She kept finding shaved hair in the sink when she lived alone, and other signs of supernatural intrusion. IIRC she verbally said, "This is a house of the Lord" etc and started revoking the permission of spirits to reside.

If she hadn't ended up moving out soon afterwards (landlady started snooping in the apartment) she'd have had our priest over to perform a cleansing rite.

I've mentioned before I have never experienced any kind of supernatural anyfuckingthing.....and it bothers me. I would like to experience something so I can know whether to believe in it or not. I've been in places that are supposedly haunted but haven't experienced anything.

No where I've lived has been unusual. A good friend of mine believes in ghosts and says that the presence of spirits makes her sick because of weakening her. But I just don't know.

It sounds like your father is keeping an eye on your mom, and maybe he'll keep the other entities in check too. Seems like it might have been a conscious choice that he made. Maybe when he's sure your mom will be all right he'll move on.

My Mimi says hello now and again in the form of flickering the lights when my family gets together for a gathering, even outside the home, even if those lights have NEVER FLICKERED BEFORE. I think she caused an upscale restaurant a lot of grief one night, but it did get us free desert!

I also was working in an old Queen Anne-style house where I KNEW I was alone, but then heard the swish of large skirts and saw part of a old-style dress coming down the top of the staircase. I ran out, ran back in, nobody there. But then I figured ehe, they were here first.

Some people are more in tune with the supernatural than others. I'm sure there's ways to make you more open, but the last thing one should ever do is go looking for trouble (i.e. Don't go to a place and say 'Come and get me'. Because something bad *will* happen) or try to force it. If it's meant to, it'll happen.

Also, L9G, I'd have to agree with what others are saying. It does sound like your father's sticking around to keep an eye on your mother.

I don't think it sounds like your father is in any distress. I think he's checking up on your mom.

My favorite ghost story is one about a married couple. The husband died first, years before the wife. The night she passed away, the servants said they saw her husband come back to their home and escort his wife out the front door. He came back for her when it was her time.

It sounds like your dad is looking over your mom. He may move on eventually, he may not. It reminds me of the ghost we had in our house. His name was Grover Stanley and he hung himself in front of our fireplace - but he was a very benevolent spirit. He would watch over the house at night and he had a habit of hiding the scissors (we think so we wouldn't hurt ourselves). He used to send the newspapers flying until my mom told him she didn't need another man to pick up after He stopped hanging around so much when my stepdad moved in, but he comes back whenever my stepdad goes out of town for a business trip. He's a southern gentleman who likes to watch over us ladies.

If your mom isn't comfortable with the spirits hanging out, I would echo having a priest (of any religion) come in and cleanse the house. We use white sage to cleanse any negativity out of our house - but it's never gotten rid of Grover, which we're fine with.

Sounds like time for a CS house investigation .... I am sure that Rob and I would be up for it. He could investigate the plumbing and mechanicals.

I think my house is infested with demons or malevolent spirits. My father has had one on top of him, I have had one or two or several "steal" my energy from directly out of where my heart is (think very painful crushing/stabbing sensation plus the sensation that someone is inside a place that is very deep and precious and should never be touched); one scare my aunt by pressing on the bed beside her as she slept. Even now, they are still here and when I watch or read something frightening I can sort of -feel- them. Energy shields I put up around me tend to either not go up all the way or be ripped like gossamer. Some will disappear when I invoke the pentagram, accompanied by screams inside my head. And I swear that there is a portal in my bedroom, directly in front of my bookcase.
