Blu Ray player not picking up external drive

We have a Samsung HT-F4550 blu ray player. A couple of days ago, it stopped picking up our NTFS formatted external drive. It picks up a USB memory stick with no problem, and if I plug the external into my computer, it picks up with no problems whatsoever- so it's not a hardware issue as far as I can tell. I've reset the blu ray player, reformatted the external and it's still not picking it up. Any advice?

I should have included that information *facepalm* sorry. Yes, the external has it's own power source.
