  • Oo-kay... a slight overreaction?

I was closing the petrol station on the dot of closing time when a car drove up. The female driver leaned out and asked me if the petrol station was open, to which I replied, "No, we're closed." Her response was, "Well, can you just reopen so I can get petrol?" "No," I said, firmly. "We are closed." Her reaction was to burst into a flood of tears and sob brokenly at me, "I just hope that you can live with yourself!" before driving off.

    Um, what?

There have been a couple times in my life when I might have done the same thing - BUT - I'd also explain why I was over reacting to that degree.

The last one was 6 years ago: Huge wind storm that brought down over 2000 power lines in my area, making many roads impassible; my car was on fumes; my phone was dead (out of minutes on a pre-pay plan), and it kept ringing and I could NOT answer the stupid thing. So, when I came down the road to find a LARGE fire engine blocking it on both sides, I did start sniffling. I was super worried that I was going to run out of gas before I got home. Payday was 36 hours away... I couldn't even see the asphalt on the roads I was driving because there was that much tree litter covering the road. A tire ran off the road multiple times in my sinuous way home, where my power had been out for over 6 hours by the time I got there. Sigh. Stressful all the way around, but I certainly didn't blame anybody for my circumstances.

Very understandable ... what a day you were having!

Everybody has days when it seems like the entire universe is against them. I do have sympathy for people like that woman until they get to the "I hope you can live with yourself!" bit. Yep, I have NO trouble living with myself, and no reason to feel any differently now.

I agree, everyone has times when everything is going from bad to worse and all it takes is one more thing to cause a break down.

I've had a few times like that myself. The difference being that I never lashed out at anyone, I broke down into tears and asked for help. Which was always given.

The state DOT has probably blocked her email address because of all of her complaints.

                        Alternately:
"After I drink enough booze to forget ***holes like you, sleeping is not a problem!!"
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.
One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.
The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers
