  • Damned THIEVES!

We got jacked at 5 a.m. November 1.

The bastards rammed a truck into the install bay and smashed through the windows into the store. Made off with $150,000 in Apple product.

Apparently, they've hit our other stores up and down the eastern seaboard.

What makes me madder is that corporate told us previously that the needed security measures to stop such a theft were too much money.

Well, geniuses, your tight-waddery just cost us well over three times that in stolen product, not to mention lost sales of protection plans, accessories and whatnot.

Ouch. Sounds like you got hit by professional thieves. Not sure what could have been done to prevent the theft other than turning the install bay into a fortress or something.

Bolllards can prevent that sort of thing. Locked, removeable ones if you need vehicle access to the area; solid concrete ones set in concrete otherwise.

If you want to disguise them and make them look less like a security feature, concrete flowerbeds do the job beautifully. In both the 'efficiently' and 'prettily' senses of the word.

      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Find out who the company's insurance company is.. and drop them a dime about their cost cutting measures. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be too happy about learning how they weren't taking proper precauctions.

That's exactly what they were asking to have installed. Other stores have them already for precisely those reasons. The flowers might look awful strange in a back alley where nobody can see them, though.

That won't be necessary, the responsible parties have gotten an earful from our management and some others. I'm hoping they'll correct the issue soon.

I remember once seeing concrete bollards/ledges disguised as seating. Tall concrete back/middle with wooden seats on either side, Very well disguised security feature, if you didn't know you wouldn't have noticed

although in your case they went thru the install bay so ... who knows if that wouldn't work at a place like my last or not.

Typical accounting where capital expenditures are to be avoided at all costs. Reminds me of my previous employer: previous to past year lousy inventory due to theft=2 new loss prevention associates, past year inventory loss within guidelines=loss of 3-4 loss prevention associates, current year inventory, lousy once again. The kicker was the straight faced email that followed wondering why the inventory results were so skewed. I'm sure it had nothing to do from going from an understaffed loss prevention department, to adequately staffed, to severely understaffed.

Waaaay back when I worked at the pizza place, our best store in town was also the one in the worst, most criminally-active neighborhood. Under the original owners, they had security there in the form of an off-duty cop at all times after dark; he escorted whomever did the deposits to the bank, etc, and was also there during busier day shifts. No loss/crime issues, nor even notable attempts.

After their group of stores was either bought out, or a new DM took over, and it was declared to be too much of an unneccessary expense, the copguard was ditched. Naturally, the store was robbed at gunpoint the very next day. It was an inside job, but still >_> The worst part was that the workers effectively had to pay for the new boss's cheapness.

The barricades in question are designed to be removable. They would be removed by staff shortly before opening and then put back in place after the last install was completed for the night.

Pretty much every store in the UK that has front facing & a decent space for a run up has concrete filled, steel bollards sunk into the ground in front of the windows. These are particularly prevalant at edge of town stores. You can see them in this photo.

Used to work at a store that had put in the removable bollards in front of the loading dock. They still got hit. The thieves stole a pickup truck and drove it through the cinderblock wall next to the loading bay door. Left the truck where it was and loaded their haul into another van that was with them.

I'm certainly not saying they're a bad idea. They'll keep out all but the most determined (or sucidial) thief, which is most of them. But the really determined pros will get in anyway.
