  • Getting a 2nd opinion, or seeing a specialist without a referall.

I have condition A, which makes it more likely for me to get condition B. Condition B can be monitored by an over the counter device, so I got one to see what kind of numbers I was getting. The numbers seemed to put me in either condition B, or precondition B for some of them.

I went to the dr and asked to be tested for condition B, and he did one simple test (there are many tests used for this), and those appeared to be normal at the time; and when I asked some questions about the numbers I was getting, he really didn't seem to know much about the condition.

I would like to try to get a 2nd opinion, preferably from a specialist, but can not get a referral to the specialist, and when I did need a speacilst for a completely unrelated condition, they set it up so I saw a specialist in their large practice.

How do I go about asking for a referral, and to one outside of their large mufti-location practice?

I kept it vague as to the conditions, as to not look like I'm asking for medical advice, but will willing post what they are, and why I think I might have it if anyone wants to know.

I'd suggest going to a walk-in clinic not connected to their practice, and explain that you want a second opinion since your regular doctor didn't provide a satisfactory answer when you brought up the issue.

Call your insurance company. Many policies state that you have a right to seek a second opinion. Explain what you want and they might very well give you the referral you are looking for.

Regarding what Mathnerd said, if it's a condition which, if caught early, can be managed relatively inexpensively, but if allowed to progress can result in major (and expensive) issues, your insurance company would DEFINITELY want to help you deal with it.

I'm an idiot for not thinking to look at my insurance information. For this insurance, it says I don't need a referral to see a specialist. I had only called on place before, and they said they need a referral, so I plan to call around to find one that won't require a referral.

Different plans in your state may require referrals which is why they said that.

In North Carolina, no referrals are needed by state law. Connecticut may be different.

A second opinion is ALWAYS a good idea.

I've called a couple of specialist to try to get an appt, and before they ask any questions about me, or my health, or my insurance, the first question I get is if I have a referral, and as soon as I say I don't, they all say the same thing, they can't see me without a referral from a primary care physician.

At this point I don't care if they take my insurance or not, I'm willing to self-pay for at least one visit. I just need to find an endocrinologist, who specializes in what I have, and also what I think I may have the start off.
