Does anyone here know if Nguyen is ever a first name?

Not that I am aware of.

Typically in most Asian countries, the surname comes first anyway.

It's usually a last name. It is was someone's first name. Nguyen Kim.

Nguyen is a family name. It would not be out of the realm of probability that somebody has used it for someone's given name, but it's not typical.
