  • Executive Casino Hosts I <3 Your Lack of Tact! (I really do)

Yes I most of the guests I talk to with gamblers and I deal with free/discounted rooms, show tickets, tournaments, shopping sprees, giveaways and more. But I'm not a casino host. All of what I do is tied to either direct marketing (we send you an offer and you respond) or it's something your entitled to based on the computer (you could book it online yourself and it's based on our occupancy needs not your schedule). I get an hourly wage and performance based bonuses and no sort of commission whatsoever.

Hosts get an annual salary and percentage bonuses based on the total loses of their players (but in exchange hosts, besides having scheduled hours, also are 24-7 on call, and are required to telemarked for a specific number of hours each week).

Over in casino services a big part of our job is taking care of as much as can be taken care of without a host (even for players assigned to a host). Hosts are busy! and for most players it really isn't worth the host's time to book something that can be done online (or through people like me in Casino customer service). We also try to minimize the number of calls we transfer to hosts from casino customer service (we have certain qualifications a guest MUST meet else they can only talk to a host in person (poke your head in a host office next time your in a casino and introduce yourself no matter how you play they really are nice in that instance).

I got a call from a dude who was super vague but inferred he was friends with a big player and name dropped a national casino marketing host. He was claiming his buddy's host was supposed to arrange some discounted rates for a tail end of a busy time with us but he hadn't heard back and was coming in the next day so he NEEDED to speak to a host. I look and see he was a decent player in the past but hadn't played in about 9 years. Against my better judgement I call a host and explain the situation and that I know that this really wasn't a call that needed a host (I make things easy by giving him info casino customer service really doesn't use but is useful to a host). We shoot the shit a little with the guest on hold (hosts seem to like me because I have a rough feel for the things they look at and can hold my own in talking about players and play). The host lets me know that he is going to "lay into this guest and let him know he needs to make his reservations a non-hosted way and talk to a host when he checks out because after 9 years he really isn't a hosted player anymore". I almost felt bad for the guest and I urged the host to go easy just in case mystery friend was someone we don't want to piss off.

I then talked to a lady that was to put it mildly insane. She could have been a big player years ago but it was so long ago I have no way to verify. She needed a basic date change to her reservation and it was all midweek so it was easy as pie. But then I get treated to a 20 minute ramble about how she used to get welcome baskets on her bed, 2 $500 bottles of wine, we paid to fly her in, blah blah. She was upset she doesn't get treated like that anymore then she dropped the I had a serious illness and lived in the middle of nowhere for 9 years card and we need to make an exception for her. I left copious notes on her reservation how she wanted to be given a higher tier status, have all her meals, and shows comped and wanted a welcome basket with no basis in current play and was promised none of this. Next day she gambled around $2xx and talked to a host. The host left notes with my notes that said "this guest is insane we have given her as much as we can based on her current play" I LOVE IT!
