LOTR was 12A. Considering the levels of violence, I came out saying, "12A my furry arse."

Sometimes we get it wrong over here don't we? I thought LOTR was at least 15. I remember when I went to see Closer, an oh so innocent 16 year old I was...my first 15 rated film...and they said they naughty c word! I was like Similarly, Atonement is a 15 over here and my boyfriend thought it should have been an 18. Out of curiousity, does anyone in the USA know what is it going to be over there?

Atonement will be rated "R for disturbing war images, language and some sexuality." I went to see Gone Baby Gone last week and saw the preview for it. I gotta get to the library - I want to read the book before it comes out.

i thought it was no kids under a certian age unless a parent was with them? i mean, we had 10 year olds seeing it with their parents when we went.
Just to clarify for any Canadians on the board who might be getting confused with the ratings being slung about here, I've got an old post detailing the differences between American and Canadian ratings.

not letting a parent get people in is kind of out there, I've snuck into "R" movies before(in the morning my local theater doesn't even always have someone checking for tickets) and most of the movies I watch are "R"(I'll watch some PG-13) for people killing shit then swearing at it, been watching them since i was like 8, and I'm not about to go on a shooting rampage

lol, i know them, mesa movie buff.
dang, this makes me glad i grew up in canada. i would have had a fairly boring childhood if my dad couldnt take me to all the horror and scifi-movies we used to go see (apperantly i was the only one willing to go with him, lol)
but i think that movie was rated 18, if not an r, and i know when i was.. oh probably around 13/14 i was seeing 18/r movies with my parents.

My older brother used to let me and my little brothers watch horror movies whenever he was forced to babysit; it was the only way to keep us quiet and away from him so he could go on his computer in peace. XD We also watched movies like Terminator and Psycho; and none of us have gone on a killing spree.

The most amusing warning I can remember was The Da Vinci Code - 'Contains flagellation'. I pointed this out to a coworker, who said 'What's flagellation?'

It is kind of funny that the classification was changed from X to NC-17 becasue of the negative connotations of X-rated films, but then theatres still refused to show the films.
Actually, if a film gets an NC-17 the studio won't market it so it usually only gets shown in Indie film houses. Theatre's won't book them in multiplexes because unless you employ someone to stand at the door to make sure no one is sneaking in, they can't risk it. The Cooler got an NC-17 and that movie is great - until I saw "This Film is not Yet Rated" I couldn't figure out why they got the rating (big suprise - not for the violence). The ratings board won't tell you why you get the rating, you just have to cut until they drop it to an R.

this is the 'warning' for stardust (which we will see on thursday)
Contains moderate fantasy violence and scary moments.

                    Scary moments?

Andara and I just saw Stardust on Saturday. We intend to buy it on HD-DVD when it comes out next month. Totally worth the price of admission.

And yes, there are some scary moments. Not horror-movie scary, exactly, but not entirely "kid-safe" - it's kind of an adult fairy tale.

Lots of innuendo that the kids will totally miss. =^_^=

That won't stop an SC bringing a small child in, and then whining when Junior is screaming with fear halfway thru. I went to see The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe with my parents, which might be based on a children's book, but has way too many scary scenes to be perfect for small kids. This guy had to take his kids out practically at the beginning, cuz they were scared of the White Witch. Good thing too; one of the kids talked thru the movie in a loud penetrating voice, the other kicked my mum's seat at regular intervals.

The ratings over in the States are a little funny at times, a PG 13 movie could have enough sensuality to be a soft core porn. I can't even remember the last time I saw a movie with a G rating in it in the theaters.

have read the book/comic, and yes, not entirely kid safe. I just like the descriptions they use.

Back when I was sweeping out theaters, one of the Managers told me the "cost of underage kids".
For Every underage kid the Theater is charged $5,000.00. Kid tossing quickly became my favorite sport.
