Wow, how did that slip under the radar?
It's sad that things like this slip under the radar more often and for longer than one would think. Most of the time, when you hear about children who are abused or end up killed by their abusers - they often discover physical indications of previous injuries. Like, bruises, fractures, scars....its really sad...

Its not until an incident like the one described in the OP happens that alerts the authorities to one behavior and they investigate to discover other issues.

Ugh... pass the duct tape, let's make sure that creature doesn't breed again.
@#$% the duct tape, I'm thinking a soda straw and 2,000 pound test epoxy.

Baby ended up being fine. Mother was arrested initially for child-endangerment for doing NOTHING to stop the older child from beating the living crap out of the infant. The charges stuck once the police found out that the infant was 3-4 months older than suspected and 10+pounds underweight, emaciated, dehydrated, and covered in sores under his clothes.

The sores I can't say much about, but the other part could be an issue on the child's part. I had one daughter that decided at three months that breast milk wasn't her thing (silly girl-- personally prepared and wonderful packaging!), so she started drinking only enough to stay alive-- barely. At six months she weighed only three ounces more than she did at birth and looked like a shar pei puppy.

Before you say "how could you let that happen?", it was a gradual thing, so we didn't notice until the wrinkles started becoming pronounced. And once we switched to formula she recovered quite nicely.

The sores part, though, would seem to indicate a serious problem at home.

I hate to say this, but maybe in the long run it's a good thing this incident happened at your store. If it hadn't, that poor baby would have gone home with these people and continued to be beat up on by his big brother and neglected by his female parental unit.

I would have gone nuts to witness a baby being punched and the mother doing nothing. That's just not normal.

Probably nobody bothered to speak up about the abuse and the neglect until the incident at the OP's store.

Umm...the only 'help' that heartless brat needs is to have the Board of Education applied to the Seat of Knowledge. And possibly to his knuckles.

Seriously, beating up on a BABY is something you do not allow kids to do, end of it. 'Mom' was so utterly spineless that she wouldn't even protect her infant from physical harm for heaven's sake.
Beating a kid who already beats on little children will not help. It also seems like, from the mothers reaction (passive nothingness), she may be abused as well (husband or bf). Where else would the kid have learned it from?

The state that the baby was in though was, is and will always will be unforgiveable and disgusting. Im glad this incident happened in public and hopefully these kids will be able to live normal lives. They ALL need help.

I'm imagining that dad (or bf) is a beater. Mom doesn't say anything to dad, but if he sees the baby with a bloody lip and asks what happened, mom will reluctantly tell (or first say, "Oh, just accident"). Then dad beats the shit out the older boy.

What depeche said, except that instead of beating the older boy, mom gets beat. Also why she doesn't discipline the older boy, she'll get beat for touching abusive spouses treasured children.

Saw this situation a lot while growing up.
