Also, depending on where and when they served, and in what capacity, they may not be able to divulge the information. EX: Former Navy Seals, Delta Force, Green Berets, Special Ops, Airborne Rangers, etc... And to "piggyback" on what others have already posted/replied... It is at the choice/discretion of the family.
    Exactly. Opsec!

Many of them simply don't want to advertise for their own safety.

except rangers. They fight tigers so they don't have to worry. (cookies for reference)

I think the old bat's theory is your paper is so liberal you don't want the veterans to get their due so you are sitting on that important info of where they fought.

Now that she is done with calling you, she has to check if the stores are changing the due date on the milk cartons...to the old-bat mobile!

This story reminds me of a regular old-bat who sends in requests for obituaries every month for years. She's not working on a genealogical tree, she's working on a forest. One obit just said, "arrangements to be announced," but there were no obits for this person after that. So she's bitching we just sent her an incomplete obit, why didnt' we look for another one. My cw said to me, "they have been dead for 10 years, they are not going to update that obit anytime soon."
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

        I wish porn had subtitles.

          And some

For some vets the wars they fought in were the worse parts of their lives, they saw best friends die, they saw people harmed in horrible ways for just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, they saw the results of some of the most stupid decisions made by people who far from the front-lines.

In other words, they don't want to remember/glory the wars they fought in. Their choice.

I have a friend like that. He went to Iraq/Afghanistan and he flat out refuses to talk about it most of the time. I don't push him. It bothers him greatly though.

In the Belisarious series a couple times the comment is made about whether a sword is truer than a shield - the point being that even the noncombatants and people involved in a feint are as important as the main attacking units.

It takes many more noncombatants to keep 1 combatant in the field than you would think.

Some folks just aren't satisfied until they've made someone else as miserable and unhappy as they are. And there are far too many people like that in the world today.
You described my MIL quite aptly. It took me 5 years to convince my wife that was not normal functional behavior.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

My dad got 2 bronzes and a silver in WW2, we only know what he got one bronze and the silver for ... we got told that the other bronze was still classified when we went to get copies of the citations for the shadowbox we were putting together for mom with the flag from his funeral.

However I am certain that he scared away at least 2 boyfriends over the years.
