  • New TV Show - Beauty and the Beast

So, along with Arrow, I'm also giving Beauty and the Beast a shot.

The first episode was interesting and I'm about to catch the second.

As much as I like Ron Perlman, I couldn't watch the 80's incarnation of the show due to how useless and whiny I thought Linda Hamilton was in it. Terminator 2 turned me around on her, making me realize it was the writing and directing.

The current incarnation stars Kristin Kreuk as Catherine, a police officer, and Jay Ryan as Vincent, the fugitive result of a failed and scrapped super-soldier program.

Just wondering if anyone else is watching, and if so, what they think.

I was going to... until I found out that Vincent is from a failed super-soldier program.

Probably because I'm forcibly reminded of Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy 7. Also because I'm sick to death of the "FAILED SUPER SOLDIER EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH." It's freaking everywhere. TV, games, comics, books. Unfortunately having four years of a creative writing BFA program under my belt makes me highly critical. I would not be able to get over it, because it would be even worse if the writing was good. If they are such good writers, why did they rely on such an old, overused back-story of "failed super soldier program"?

Don't let me change your mind though, which I know I probably didn't - which is good. That's the glory of subjectivity.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

I can totally understand why they went with the "government project on the loose" angle. It's the type of cliche that makes for streamlined introduction and gives a good reason for the guy (who doesn't look incredibly not-normal) to be hiding out as standard. They get to focus more on the presentation and less on the exposition.

In the old show, Vincent was more NVN (not very near) human with all the shaggy fur, so he had to keep on the down low. In this version, aside from a massive scar and doing a minor "hulk out," he's pretty near human enough that nobody would notice, so they've gone with the "hiding from the shady secret military/government agency" angle to force him to stay hidden as a general rule.

It also makes it less necessary for his allies to be similarly situated; they can be standard people who just happen to be trustworthy.

However, I can also see why such a shortcut would be a deal breaker for watching the show. There are a couple of shows out there that I won't watch for similar reasons that don't make the shows bad, just too irksome for me to enjoy.

What channel is it airing on? I don't recall hearing about it, though I might have missed it if it was mentioned in Entertainment Weekly.
        Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
        DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

BatB is on the CW, but I catch it on Hulu. It airs on Thursdays, and it's 2 episodes in, now.

I heard abut it, but I didn't think it was happening. I guess it's alright, im just not a fan of Kristen Kreuk.

                hmmm interesting.
although part of me wonders if they're going to do the thing where Vincent's hair looks better than Catherine's...

So is KK's acting different from Smallville or she acting like Lana Lang?

So it's like a reboot of BatB from the 90's? Damn, I liked that show when I was younger but a reboot now sounds like suck. I can understand if it's not a reboot, but if it's really similar, that shows Hollywood has no new ideas.

I never watched Smallville, so I have no frame of reference.

And, yes, it's definitely a reboot of the 90s show, but I never got to see much of that, despite liking it, so I can't really recall much beyond the fact that I loved Perlman as Vincent.
