  • A warning for folks...

If someone offers you a link for a new screensaver,do NOT click it. It will launch something that will take over your computer remotely-fill it up with porn which you cannot delete, open all the email addresses and contacts in your list and try and send it to them.It will remotely cancel your anti virus and then fill it with viruses galore(400 in an hour!!)
It will also log onto various unsuitable sites as 'you' and open up your webcam so that you can be recorded without knowing it... and then threaten to post pictures of you and the sites you're supposed to have visited online unless you make a 'donation'...
And that is why my poor computer is being de-porned and de-virused...
And the nice men in blue have been given the details of the account number and name that they were kind enough to give me as to where they wanted the money sent...

    Stay safe...

Screen Savers are one of the most common things to use as malware vectors, right up there with custom cursors and drive-by website hijacking. Best screen saver you can use is to simply turn the monitor off.

Yup. Police will likely not be able to do much, as most of those links will originate overseas, with Russia, China, and Nigeria popular for the ones they can track down.

Sometimes there is only one cure... nuke it from orbit till it glows, and then shoot it in the dark. Meaning.. full factory reset. Always keep a boot disk handy, and make sure that after it is used to get that boot disked unvirused (is that a word?). I had to do mine twice.. and I visit here, Facebook, Hearthstone, and another forum I moderate in. That is IT.

Yup. It's similar to "ransomware" that locks down your system completely, and will wipe all your files unless you pay to get an encryption key.

This scam has been around for a couple of decades. It's why you should never trust sites that claim to check your system for slowness, viruses, or why you should never down load screen savers, and should avoid "free" porn sites.

It's also why you should back up your files frequently

Being a Mac user is not the protection it used to be. More and more of these scams are popping up on Macs.

That earworm started up for me too.

I do agree that the RL situation sucks bigtime.

At least in this day and age of nice cheap memory cards and flash drives you can easily back up your most important files on them. I even do that with my video game consoles (PS2 cards are great for backing up a bunch of PS1 saves for example).
