  • ugh, debit card fraud; I need sympathy

So the last time I ordered pizza from anywhere was months ago, probably over the summer or last spring. I only do it every few years or so, like twice since I moved here 11 years ago. I just checked my bank account and it was in the negative. I was about to go to bed, but I went online to check there. It's a $41 charge at a red roof pizza two days ago. I could not figure out how it happened, as my debit card is currently a foot away from me. The fraud dept. lady said a PIN wasn't used, so someone got ahold of my VISA number. I don't know how, except that they still have the number stored in their system, months later. I suspect a dishonest employee. A new card is on it's way and I will get a credit, but I had to do a cash advance to bring the account positive. I mean, I was down to my last 2 dollars.

This is on top of the fact that I had a mishap Saturday night and have a concussion, and have to work in 6 1/2 hours, which is a shift I totally forgot I picked up. Work did call me to find out if I could still come in, which was nice, and I'll go in on the contingency that I go home early if I get too dizzy again. I so don't need this this week, you know?

Hugs. I went through that about a year ago, except somebody bought a used car then tagged it and insured it in my name. I eventually got all the money back, but it was a horrible week in between

Ugh. Just this weekend, my brother and his family went to a small burger place and paid with a card, only to find out later that the cashier had upped his tip to forty bucks on a $25 order >_< Now, the entire office knows about it and is making sure other people know...

HMMMMM If you are where I think you live then your red roof pizza place is in the franchise that I work for . IF memory serves me correctly, the POS system DOES NOT store credit/debt card numbers or info. For a CC/debt transaction the POS system ONLY needs the card number and the expiration date AND NO PIN NUMBER IS needed BUT no numbers are stored at the store level beyond the End of Day . The only place I can think of where a card number is stored is on the main company's website.

I suspect that someone at the store level copied your card number and expiration date and used that info months later.

HAVE you contacted that particular red roof pizza place to alert management of the situation????

This is the reason why I use credit cards now to pay for stuff. At least you decide when to pay or to dispute the charge when the bill comes. With a bank, your money disappears instantly, and you may find it hard to dispute the charge with them.

I don't have any credit cards, but I'm not using my card without a pin anymore. I am wondering if the pizza place will be notified by the bank's fraud dept. I will have to see what happens. But my new debit card will have a different VISA number.

Please tell me your brother went to the manager of the restaurant to get that tip refunded!

My sympathies as well. Not only did we have a theft via PayPal over the summer that I posted about in Off Topic, but three years ago we had a mystery charge show up on our credit card statement while we were on vacation.

We were spending two weeks with my hubby's family, one at their house in Texas and then one at a condo in Hawaii. Early in the first week, we were glancing over our statement when we saw a purchase neither of us recognized. We called it in, and the card company dutifully canceled our cards and took down my in-laws' address to ship us new ones in time to take with us to Hawaii so we wouldn't be without funds.

Except that the card rep wrote my in-laws' address down wrong, so the cards were going to the completely wrong place. By the time we found out later that week (when the cards didn't arrive as promised), we had to call in again, get those cards canceled as well, and have the new ones shipped to our home back in New England because they weren't going to arrive in Texas before we left for Hawaii. Luckily we still had our debit card in case of emergency, but I was a bit peeved at the rep who got the address wrong.

But yeah, we try not to use the debit card unless we absolutely have to, which is why between the two of us, we keep only one copy (in my wallet because I do most of the errands). Everything goes on our credit card (which has a nice rewards system), and then the checking account is used to pay it off at the end of the month. That way the checkbook register isn't cluttered with transactions and the odds of someone getting their hands on our debit card number and PIN are slim to nil.

I wish I could get a credit card again for that reason.
