  • Them ol' Gaming Commission Blues

Working at a Casino means not only being subject to the policies of whatever company owns and operates it but also the State gaming commission.

These organizations seem to exist for no other to reason than to come up with dozens upon dozens of crazy rules, policies and restrictions to make working in a casino so very more stressful and aggravating "fun". Also, they exist to make money. In order to work in a gaming position, you need a permit which can cost north of $100. Then you need to renew said permit (at the previously mentioned cost) every few years to, you know, keep your job.

I understand that "Gaming" as they are called, does occasionally do good things, but I'd be willing to be that just about anyone who works in a Casino could tell you at length how much they loathe these commissions.

Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about it.

Any profession where workers have to be licensed in some way is going to run into this. It sucks that I have to pay several hundred dollars a year between license renewal fees and continuing education--most of which is not reimbursed because it's not quite enough to make a difference on my taxes. Which doesn't even include stuff that's not required but would probably be a good idea.

    So, I feel your pain.

I've always felt that casinos should cover the costs of having their people certified for the job that they hired them for. I feel similarly about a lot of jobs where you need some sort of certification.

I, apparently, am odd for doing this though, since no business ever agrees with me

At least where I work they split the cost of getting your license... you have to pay the application fee (which is still like $70), but they pay for all the fingerprinting and background checks and other fun stuff.

Pagan, there is a slight difference though between the pharmacy technician license and a gaming card (at least in Nevada)... in Nevada you have to go through the background checks and fingerprinting not just when you come up for renewal, but when you move jobs as well. If I had a license that I truly could take with me, no questions asked, then yeah, I'd gladly pay for it myself, but when my license is partially tied to where I work anyway, then yeah, they should at least help pay for it, if not pay for it outright.

I've never heard of a pharmacy (chain or retail) paying for a pharmacist's license. Don't know about techs' certs; they're still relatively new in the states of my licensure.

I have had the Chain of Verylarge Stores sponsor our continuing education classes, though.
