  • That "War Story" thing

I know this is posted elsewhere in another thread, but I think a refresher is in order, as it comes up from time to time, and there seems to be confusion about the war story process.

First and foremost, we ask that people do not post within the thread itself to nominate a story.
It may seem petty to some, but the reason for this is very simple.
We want to avoid hurt feelings if a story does not make it to the War Story forum.

If the mod team doesn't feel a story makes the grade as a War Story, but there have been all kinds of posts within a thread calling for it to be made a War Story, there can be resentment.

The proper procedure for nominating a War Story is to PM a mod, or report the thread and post your nomination as the reason for the report.
You must be very clear and very specific about why you feel it makes a good War Story.

You may nominate your own story, but be warned that a member touting their own story may set off a red flag as to the veracity of the tale, and it can trigger suspicions of VBS*. Unfortunately, tall tale tellers of the past have sort of ruined it for others, and as a result, we tend to be a lot more skeptical.

By the same token, if a member feels that a story may be receiving attention and has the potential to receive War Story nominations, but they have doubts about the truthfulness of the story, they may feel free to PM a mod with their concerns. All nominations and reports regarding a post get due consideration by the mod team, so feedback from everyone is important to help the mods reach a decision.

Again, we just ask that it be done privately, away from the thread.

    * VBS = Vinegar Boy Syndrome (when a poster tries to inflate their tale with enough manure to fertilize a few acres, just to gain acclaim from the good members of the board, all in hopes of becoming as famous as that tale.)

Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
