Part I: Guidelines for Posting in Sickbay on Customer’s Suck!

We’ve been having problems with some of the early posts in Sickbay on Customer’s Suck. Rapscallion has been very kind in giving our health care members a place to post rants about our patients, or patients about their caregivers.

However, we’ve had quite a few people post requests for medical advice, which is verboten per CS rules. On a personal note, I’ll confess to feeding this as I am a nursing instructor and love to teach and talk shop.

So Rapscallion, Amina, Seshat, myself and a few others have collaborated to come up with clearer guidelines about what is OK and what is not. Moderators can and WILL shut down threads that violate these guidelines.

Remember, none of us here are physicians. We have a few nurses, a nursing student/medic, a couple of pharmacists and some folks with chronic problems who have a lot of experience coping with them. When in doubt, see your doc. He’s the one who knows you, he’s the one best equipped to meet your needs.

Any information here is of a general nature. It does not substitute for a consultation with your regular health care provider (physician, PA, or Nurse Practitioner). Always check with your primary care provider before taking or not taking any suggestions provided in this forum. Bear in mind also, CS members cannot verify the licensure or credentials of any member claiming expertise. Use discretion and let the buyer beware. Customerssuck.com takes no responsibility for the content or opinions posted.

Questions or situations that are OK for Sickbay
    • What happens with this procedure?
    • How do I ask my doctor about this?
    • I've been diagnosed with X: does anyone else have it? How do you live with it? (IE: patient-to-patient support)
    • Doctor says I have X, what does that mean?

My health care provider really pissed me off because . . .
My patient/customer really pissed me off because (providers, please be cautious of HIPAA).

Questions or Postings that Might be OK
    • I have (depression, diabetes, PCOS, whatever), what are the normal ways of treating it?
    • I have this (whatever), do I need to see a doctor? (the answer will always be either 'yes' or 'show it to a pharmacist/nurse practitioner/other medical specialist')
    • I’m taking this medication, what are the side effects? (this question is better directed to your pharmacist, but people here can tell you what they've experienced)

Posters should be aware that answers will be of a general nature, and should not be relied upon as advice. Go see your doctor. Really.

Questions or Postings that are NOT Okay
    • Diagnose this for me.
    • Tell me how to treat this.
    • I read about this and I think I have it, do I?.

    Important Notes:

Members, please be aware of general Customers Suck guidelines. They still apply here when it comes to issues of “failing to see the suck,” and the like.

If you bitch about your provider, bear in mind that the health care professionals may play a bit of “devil’s advocate.” Sometimes we see things differently than patients do. However, providers, try not to dismiss or minimize the member’s complaints. We weren’t there.

Ideally, patients will gain a greater understanding of where providers are coming from with the questions we ask and the way we provide care, because the vast majority of us really do care about what we do.

Ideally members will gain greater insight in how to advocate for themselves, identify bad care, and communicate their needs and desires for their care to their providers in a constructive way.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

Slight update. We've done a bit of talking behind the scenes and supplements is something that raised its head recently, with a couple of people asking us if it was ok to post queries about it.

We've had to decide that if you have queries about supplements and the like, can you please take them to the pharmacist of your choice? There are a raft of potential problems, and the one that worries us most of all is the chance for chemical interactions.

      Cheers!

      Rapscallion
