    Cicadas are with us every year. Each year has a different Brood, and each Brood is a different size, which also varies by area. Each Brood takes either 13 or 17 years to cycle through their life. There are 20 Broods. The largest Broods get a lot of attention, smaller Broods generally go unnoticed. This year is Brood XIV. Also, since the cicadas have no teeth, they can't bite.

      Don't they have mandibles ? Or do they have palps ?

        No they don't. At this stage of their life they do not eat. They have only one function, to reproduce before dying. That's what all the noise is about, it's the cicada version of "hey baby."
