CheerfulTreeRat, how'd the director take your comment?
It was evident that he had a promising future as a goldfish impersonator, should his career as a Director prove fruitless. My colleagues were most amused as he bustled off...

It has become fairly standard at any job to remove an employee who has given their intention to leave a job fairly quickly. It removes the temptation and ability for them to "mess" with the business.
This...and it sometimes happened before the economic crisis too. It probably does depend a lot on your line of work and how much private info you have access to.

Seems like most of the people at the call center who give their 2 week notice (at least in my vertical) stay the whole time...but I think that's mostly because they can't be easily replaced, and we're overworked enough as it is.

One place I worked, oh, they took your two week notice just fine, but....had a habit of banning some people at the end of their last day.

Never did figure out why. I'm just surprised they didn't do it to me. Wouldn't have mattered, I rarely go to that side of town anyway.
I know it's policy to not allow former employees on the property at my company. Apparently, there was a case where a disgruntled maintenance man who had recently been fired came back knocking on the GM's apartment door. The GM recognized the former employee through the peephole, opened the door...and had his head blown off by said former employee.

We've let former employees come back to use the pool and such, but the official policy is that we aren't supposed to.

But this was a retail store (Hasting's - they sell music, book, and videos) in a strip mall.

Happened to me in a retail situation. I was fed up with veiled (& blatant) accusations of theft, none of which were true & so obviously unproven, so I gave notice. I only needed to give one week's notice, but the last day of it I would have been unsupervised for an hour so they gave me the day off.

I've also been invited to a meeting where I was fired while my workstation was powered down to prevent me from doing any of the damage mentioned above. Unfortunately, they'd forgotten about the policy that allowed me to listen to my own music through the computer's CD drive... So all their failed security was wasted, & they had to power it back up for me That place would be ripe for a whole series of stories, sadly most of which I've blocked out!

It's my understanding that in the graphics industry, it's not uncommon to find yourself quickly escorted off property. They're afraid you'll delete the work you did or steal it all. At least that's what happened to my hubby when he was made redundant and several of our friends have mentioned it happening to them.
