A couple of drunks got killed on a Russian level crossing fairly recently. The reason this made the news is because it was the new high-speed train from Finland to Russia which ran them over.
The level crossing was working, the barriers were down, and they just took no notice of them. This may have been influenced by the fact that the Russians close the crossing a full half-hour before the high-speed train arrives. For local trains it is closed for only a cople of minutes at a time.
The Finnish side of the border has no level crossings on the line.
