When I used to work at the local op shop I caught a guuy trying to buy a pair of shorts with a swapped tag that he claimed had 'fallen off'.

That was only a few dollars but $100 books! I'd find a way to lock them up somehow.

    Good luck catching that thief.

Two things ... first, about the OP. If you have a camera, get a cheap/used VHS recorder. Run that all day on super long play mode.

Second, regarding the 36 gifts lady ... I would've unwrapped them one at a time as I gave them back. Wait for her to pony up the cash. Let her get mad, let's see where the sympathy lies.

at my resturant, we no longer sell poppies, because someone stole it. Which I hear is pretty common.
wait poppies, as in the flowers as in wizard of oz? ...why did you every carry them?
and second i quated 900 dollars, because you need almost 10 webcams (estimated about 300 dollars) the cheap lap top (about 500) and add about another 100 for some CDs to record the info on so you can actually have a records.

The thing that really gets me about this thief is that we are a NON-PROFIT. ALL profits go to students. This person is literally taking money away from deserving students.
Shoplifters suck, especially when they're stealing from what is basically a charity.
Stealing from a charity is as low as anyone could go. Whoever that thief is, I hope they DIAF and rot in hell for that

As far as the $100+ books go, I would suggest having them in a locked case.

These are the from the Royal British Legion Poppy Fund every year for Remembrance Day (November 11th). The newsagent next to our shop had his stolen, but he rallied the customers to make more back by dragging the local newspapers in.

In 40 years of working in all kinds of businesses I have found that if someone wants something bad enough, they'll not hesitate to steal it, even if it is right under the cashier's nose. It might be a good idea to check in your area for a security specialist. They can help with camera placement, shelf location and elimination of blind spots.
The game-store owner used the book Why We Buy to try and implement shoplifting deterrents (basically, the only one "in place" is to greet every customer which everyone knows doesn't work). Hasn't done squat; if anything theft has gone up in the new space due to the layout (sure, put the pricy stuff downstairs with no large-bag checks, WTF do you think is going to happen?). Basically the only non-blind spots are right in front of the register and down the first two aisles directly across from the counter.
