  • "Maybe I could wave my magic wand for you."

I have had chronic plantar fasciitis for over 2 years now. I have done every conservative treatment available - ice, anti-inflammatories (the only one that worked made me vomit), stretching, physical therapy, ultrasound therapy, walking cast, orthotics, significant weight loss, cortisone shots, etc - and none have provided any measure of relief.

I had a follow-up with my latest podiatrist (original one retired) to discuss finally having the surgery. I don't WANT surgery, but I'm about at the end of my ability to cope with this and am getting pretty desperate. I've gotten the feeling that this doctor has never believed me about how bad the pain is or how ineffective the treatments have been. He's got this sneering, condescending attitude, and once even asked me if I was lying about the pain I claimed during an examination (honestly, I don't think I could fake jumping that far off the table if my life depended on it). Anyway, he flat-out refused to do the surgery, saying that he only does about 2 PF surgeries a year, "and you're not one of them."

Confused, I asked him why not, and he said that he doesn't consider my case to be chronic, even though it's been going on every day since it started and has never let up.

I asked him what else he wanted me to do for relief, and he called in one of the nurses, asked her to go to his car and get his magic wand, and said, "Maybe I could wave my magic wand for you. Would that make you feel better?"

    I got up and left.

Still looking for a new podiatrist.

Report him to the local chapter of the Medical Association. Also, if he is associated with a hospital, you can report him to them. That was totally uncalled for ant not appropriate at all.

My GP is handling it. He says he's heard too many bad things about this guy lately. I don't know who he'll report him to or if he ever will get around to it, but he did tell me not to worry about it, he'll take care of it, and referred me to a different podiatry office.

This is just me, but if it was me, I would ask the GP who to report it to and send a letter yourself as well. The more people who report it the better. But I am glad to hear that your GP is willing to help you find someone new. I hope they can see you soon.

Unbelieveably rude and unprofessional. And to drag the nurse into his mocking of you? Wrong.

Oh, your poor feetsies... (if you want one)
And "doctor" needs a stick-removal operation. Why he gotta be like that?
I'm glad at least one of your doctors isn't doing jerk-things like that.
I hope you can find a gem soon.

What an asshole! And I thought my podiatrist was bad.

My mom has plantar fasciitis. It's extremely painful for her--and she DOESN'T have it chronically.

                I'm glad he's being reported!

Oy vey. OK, that was totally uncalled for.

But look on the bright side. If this guy only does 2 PF surgeries a year, you REAALLY don't want him operating on you!

You want someone who has done a lot of these surgeries and knows what he is doing.

Report this guy to the Medical Board yourself. Don't depend on your GP to do it.

I once had a doctor say 'I agree that X would be good for you. But I have very little experience with them - I recommend you go to Y to get it done.' I consider that intelligent on her part.

(For the curious, 'X' was my IUD, and 'Y' was either planned parenthood or family planning. I forget which I ultimately went to.)

                    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

You need to file a complaint with the State Board youself, don't rely on anyone else to do it because it's not going to happen most likely. The Board wants to hear directly from you in your own words, not through a secondary person.

File a complaint. And then ask him if you can stick his magic wand in his A@@ to make you feel better.

Some docs just seem to have the "I went to school so I am GOD" attitude, and they need to stop.

Are you kidding me?!? What a grade A ASSHOLE! If anyone needs to be reported to the Medical Board and the hospital that doctor works for it is him! If that is the way he treats patients he needs to lose his ability to treat patients.

And, to bring the nurse in on it shows his complete lack of professionalism. I hope she wrote him up for that! He thinks too highly of himself should be brought back down to reality!

I have run into a doctor like that. I was at my family doctor after I had seen a new pain specialist once and only once, who never once touched me and barely spoke to me. A paper fell out of my chart that was from this pain specialist, it noted a complete exam (that never happened) and it said I had refused to stop smoking and I should be denied any pain medications or relief till I agreed to stop smoking and went through a program for it. The thing is, he never once asked me if I smoked and I hadn't smoked for almost a week when I saw him. I saw him look at the smokes Mr. Mis had in his pocket and start writing like crazy in my chart, which confused me at the time.

The thing is, I had horrendous back pain that came on without warning and would go on for weeks. While dealing with that I got leg pain that was a constant. Most of that pain has been dealt with by the surgery I had. I was lucky that all of my doctors refused to comply with what that asshole wrote down. I did report him but I don't know if anything was done about it.
