  • His and Hers ER's. Not my idea of a romantic Friday night

I think I had one of the worst weekends on record, but first, a little background.

Me: I've been dealing with chronic, disabling, but undiagnosed abdominal pain since June, but it's been completely disabling since August. I've been hospitalized and bounced back and forth between a bunch of different specialists, and nobody could find an answer.

BF: Had an enormous kidney stone that was too big to pass, along with numerous smaller stones. He had a two part surgical procedure in early October to get rid of them, but there were some stones lodged in a place where the surgeon couldn't get to them. They waited a couple weeks, and in spite of passing six stones, CT showed at least 5 or 6 more, so they scheduled an additional operation to remove the rest. That was last Tuesday. There was a stint left in that he had instructions to remove himself on Friday.

So, Friday rolls around and all seems to be going okay. I was feeling as cruddy as ever, but more focused on bf. He did fine for the first few hours after the stint came out, then all of a sudden was doubled over in pain on the kitchen floor. Morphine did nothing to alleviate that pain, so we called his surgeon, who told him to go to the ER. Now, with his insurance, he has to go to one of a rather small network of hospitals that only takes that one insurance. This will be important later. So, we get to the ER, and I'm feeling worse and worse. His daughter had met us there, just in case I needed her to stay with him. I'm glad she did, as I was getting pretty bad. I headed home, and kept getting worse, so I called a friend to take me to the ER. It had gotten that bad. Well, I had to go to a different hospital (one that took my insurance). So, off we went.

Between me, bf, bf's daughter and my friend, text messages went back and forth updating everybody on how bf and I were doing and what was going on. At one point, bf's daughter texted that they were taking him back to ultrasound. My response was "Funny, that's where I'm headed now. Matching ultrasounds is NOT my idea of a romantic Friday night."

The outcome: BF just had a whole lot of irritation and swelling from the stint coming out. I, on the other hand, got admitted for emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder. It's a good thing I went when I did. Within hours I was vomiting uncontrollably, in spite of IV zofran every two hours that got switched to IV phenergan (which only sort of stopped the vomiting, but at least got it slowed down enough for surgery). This was definitely not the greatest weekend, though I'm hoping that this solves the chronic pain issue.

I did make bf promise me that we would make every effort to avoid hospitals for a while. We shall see.

That's an awful way to spend the weekend. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for both of you!
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

Expect some abdominal discomfort from the gas they inject into your peritoneum for the next few days. The incisions themselves should heal quickly.

I had my gallbladder out six years ago and have done fairly well. I've had some pain where my gallbladder used to be that's gotten pretty severe at times. I suspect a stone in the common bile duct, but nothing showed up on ultrasound. But I'm weird that way.

Most people recover just fine from this. Sorry to hear about BF: I've had kidney stones too, and they're miserable.

Best wishes to both of you for your recovery.

I had my gallbladder removed last year as a result of chronic ongoing pain episodes (after my poor innocent appendix was removed in emergency surgery as the initial suspected culprit). But once I'd recovered from the surgery(s) the pain completely cleared up, so hopefully it will be the same for you.

The only consequences that I've seen so far is that I now have to be careful about eating large quantities of certain fatty foods or I'll end up with a nasty case of diarrhea. (not sure how common this is, but it was one of the things the doctors warned me to look out for, so probably somewhat common)

I've been lucky. I haven't had much in the way of dietary problems since I had m gallbladder out.

I do have IBS anyway (had it for years), with constipation. Diet highly affects that, so there are things I eat and things I try to avoid to keep that under control. That likely keeps me from having the gall bladder like problems as well.

I suspect the gallstone like pain I've had this past year (accompanied later by nasty bile filled diarrhea) has more to do with the weight I've been losing than anything else. I've got to go back to the doctor and get more workup to see what the deal is.

Thanks for the tips. Right now I just feel uncomfortably full all the time, now matter how little I eat. 4 Goldfish crackers and I feel like I've just eaten a 15 course meal. Ugh.

Other than that, recovery seems to be going well.

Had mine GB out three years ago. Had some gastro issues at first, but it's rare now, although apparently the metformin is still occasionally causing it again.

SapphireSilk, thank you for confirming something for me. I occasionally have pain in the GB area and I thought it might be internal scar tissue pulling. Now I know there can be a stone in the bile duct, so I'll keep that in mind. The pain is infrequent and mild, but I was wondering what the heck might be going on.

I just had mine out last January.

I got some slim fast/ Ensure shakes. I couldn't really eat for awhile, but since those are made to replace meals I was at least able to get some nutrients in me. They were easier than real food for a few days.

Though of course you should go back to real food asap.

That's what my NP thought several years ago, the first time I had that pain. But then it went away for a couple of years and I had no pain at all. Then it comes back last Spring. Pretty intense; I missed a few days of work because of it. Then gone for the Summer, and back again a couple of months ago.

Woke up in the middle of the night, literally crying in pain. Lasted about 20 minutes; just when I was ready to call 911, the pain stopped as suddenly as it came. I have no doubt I passed a stone, but I didn't bother with the hospital because I knew they wouldn't find anything wrong with me and I can't afford the bills. Had another episode a couple of weeks ago, so I guess it's time to make an appointment with the GI doc.

I really wish I could eat. This is getting old. Anything I try to eat just bloats me up with gas. Poor bf. I've nearly gassed him out of the bedroom every night this week. Plus there's this weird stabbing, flip-flopping kind of pain in my lower right side. It's not near any of the incisions, which is weird. It sort of feels like a stabby version of a baby flipping around at about 16-18 weeks, but totally in the wrong part of the body.
