  • They like putting it in early; annoying!

So many customers do this! Why don't people wait until I tell them to insert/swipe their card? Or wait until I total them? People whip out their credit cards then insert them right away. I havn't even pressed the total button. Or else I total them and before I can ask "how are you paying?" or "will that be cash or credit?" they use their cc.

Then of course I enter "total" then "cc" while they have their card in the machine or they swiped, and the pin machine is expecting them to insert or swipe after I press "credit card" and some get annoyed I asked them to do it again.

Do people do that at other stores? I've never seen people do that before.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

    I wish porn had subtitles.

They do it because other stores' systems can handle that. The card can be inserted any time after I scan the first item. I'm sure it's confusing for them, but I understand your frustration. It's one of those lose/lose things.

They would have arrived by now, but I came early.

Mostly once a transaction is started the screen will say that I can swipe my card. But there are a few places where the machines don't let me. I try to watch the screen, but I'm very used to being able to swipe whenever.

That being said, it's stupid to get mad at the cashier about it. It might be partly a location thing, if the OP hasn't seen this habit very often. Maybe it's more common in that area for the machines to need cashier input first.

For some reason in our system, sometimes if a customer swipes their card 'early' the system will hang (pinpad says "Please Wait", register acts as if there was no pinpad input after I select "EFT" payment) requiring the cashier to cancel it and they need to swipe again.

I know that it will lock up if the customer swipes simultaneous with me hitting "EFT", but not sure why it would happen otherwise. Could be just our crap infrastructure, it's well-known that the wiring in this building can't handle a data load the way it should (we were going to get WiFi installed, but it didn't work and even the installers were baffled)

They do that constantly at my store, then they complain that "all these machines are different!" Yes, they are. That's why you need to pay attention and read the directions. I mean, it's your money, why the heck aren't you paying attention?

If they're my customers they're too busy paying attention to what all the other customers are doing, what's going on at cafe (I don't know, they just stare at it), the service dog over there, the clouds outside the door, the penny on the floor, pretty much whatever has nothing to do with them.

If customers put their card in before our system's ready for it, the machine asks them to take it out again. The number of people who say "It says to remove my card. What should I do?" is ridiculous!

Although, to be fair, our internet connection is far from wonderful, and breathing at the card machine can cause it to throw a paddy, so it's not always the customers' fault!

I think I'd be distracted by the service dog. I know enough not to touch her bother a dog who is working, but I am rather susceptible to fur. I tend to get distracted by doggies because they are generally more interesting than whatever else is going on. Cuter too.
