  • Security does not equal adult babysitters!

I know I've mentioned where I work is having construction done right now, so at least 60 workers get signed in a day. They get badges, and those working here for the first time sign safety paperwork and watch a video with security, get asked if they need any safety gear (vest, glasses, etc.) and then the employee they're working for gives them a further construction safety while on site class. First timers also need an escort their first day, and get a different colored badge.

Had a group of workers who have been here before, save for one new guy who we gave training to.

I caught this group working later, only one of them (a regular) wearing a vest, and the new guy without his escort. I told them they had to put their vests on, and informed their employee contact.

The employee contact then proceeded to ask "well, why didn't you give them safety vests?"

First, these guys have BEEN HERE before and were taught multiple times what the safety rules were, so we don't bother asking them. Second, since he had a new worker, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WITH HIM and noticed he wasn't wearing a vest! Third, why didn't the workers THEMSELVES remember or remind the new guy to wear one? Why are THEY not liable for their behavior?? Security issues badges, we cannot babysit the workers to make sure they are in compliance with the rules 24/7; that is why there is an employee responsible for them!

These workers are driving me nuts; every day I catch a half dozen not wearing safety vests, wearing watches and necklaces, when they have been clearly trained TO TAKE THAT STUFF OFF! before entering the facility; yet they always act SO SURPRISED "Ohh, I didn't know." Which proves that they haven't paid attention to anything, since they SIGNED PAPERWORK saying they were told and understand the rules!

Security has no power to discipline the workers for breaking the rules; we can only report it to their employee contact, who must take action. Cue multiple contacts asking "why doesn't the worker from company X ever wear/do/not do (this)?" Um, because I keep reporting to you that he says he wasn't told/forgets and you haven't kicked him off the job or retrained him? Duh.

GRRRAAAHHH! I want to rip my hair out so bad, because we are ALWAYS getting blamed! I'm about ready to pretend I don't see the violations so I don't have to inform the contacts and don't get the 3rd degree!

Or, if you can get away with it, when you're asked 'why didn't you...' reply "That's YOUR job. Why aren't you doing your job?"
