  • Even cops can be SC

A cop comes up to me in the library, and she has her arms full of books that look like they came from the 2nd floor.

    WD=Welcome Desk

    Cop: where are the audio?
Me: Audio is around the corner
(note: there is a huge sign that says "audiobooks, cds, dvds", so she can't miss it.)
Cop: *kind of turns around and tells me something that makes me think I didn't understand her question, and says it with an attitude*
Me: You did say audio, right?
Cop: I can't find the audiobook, can someone help me *attitude*.
(note: I am to understand that "someone" means "you". Why didn't she then say, Can you help me?")
(note the second: I'm at the Welcome Desk. They don't like it that the one person stationed at the WD leave the WD alone. Because then people will walk in and then complain to the mayor how there's no librarians in the library )
Me: There is a woman around the corner, she can help you to find the audiobooks.

Now the cop goes to the checkout desk, which is in the lobby as the WD is. Luckily we arnt' busy but she gets one of the check-out people to go help her look for the audiobook.

I guess what makes her sucky is her tone of voice. And she really didn't make her self clear, just was passive aggressive. As I stated, saying "can someone help me?" instead of "Can you help me?" and saying, "I can't find the audiobook" when all she did was turn around, maybe spy where the 2 shelves of audiobooks where, and decided it would be a Herculean task to look for the audio book on those 2 shelves. And did I mention the attitude tone of voice?

Also, she asked for the "audio" so either she means the CDs or audiobooks. Maybe she assumed I didn't know what I was talking about because I used the same term she used.

heh no offense here but the fact she was a cop is kinda irrelevant.

still SC. but occupation doesnt manner make. so to speak.

but i live in a beach city in southern california, we have aggressive cops, so i like to point out the flaws too.

meh. Cops can be some of the best people in the world, but they can also be some of the worst, most are right in between.

Fact is, a lot of people become cops because they figure 'It's a similar degree of respect to being in the military, without the risk.' those people annoy the hell out of me.

Many others join for the right reasons but later realize that people give them respect, and start taking advantage of it. Those people give everyone who even considers the business a bad name.

Then there are people who served in the military, have the training to do very, very illegal things without getting caught, but work in law enforcement anyway because they believe in doing the right thing, even if it isn't profitable. I know several personally, and that's the way I'm trying to set my life up to go.

Once when I happened to have some business in another city, I sat in on its zoning commission meeting. A police officer came in with a request to change the zoning at his home so he could keep the big building he already had built in his back yard (i.e. something he built illegally). He wore his full police uniform to the meeting/hearing.

The officer's justification for building the illegal structure was that he did not see how it hurt anyone, and that he had done a good job of construction. (In fact, the structure did appear to be well built, but the city's staff stated that no building permits had been pulled for its construction as the officer had been told of the zoning problem when he applied for them.)

One of the members asked him if he was on duty right now. The officer asked what that had to do with anything. The commissioner said it was important to her as she knew the police forbid any personal business being done while an officer was on duty and she did not want the officer to get into trouble. The officer quickly stated that he had taken the whole day off for this hearing. The commissioner then asked why the officer was in full uniform if he was not on the job.

The officer got REALLY pissed (talk about a red face!) and said he was allowed to wear the uniform whenever he wanted and "this whole line of questioning was irrelevant."

Another commissioner asked him whether he was wearing his uniform when he applied for the permits, was told of the zoning problem or built the illegal structure knowing it was not allowed. The officer ignored the point and stated that he knew he could get everything straightened out later if anyone complained, so he had not worried about it. A third commissioner stated that he was offended that he officer thought his status as a police officer would make the commission give him what he wanted.

The officer lost, and stormed out after the vote. I wonder if he ever took the structure down, or just figured no fellow officer ever would ticket him.

*sigh* I think there is a misunderstanding. I'm not saying all cops are bad or "this cop was an SC so all cops are SCs". I just used the title I did just to point out not all cops are Polliannas. Heck, I have a bunch of stories on homeless people, acting like SCs, and "bussinessmen" acting like SCs, but I don't think people said "well being a homeless person has nothing to do with the story."
unless sarcasm is being used. I have no sarcasm radar.

I don't see anyone singling you out for tageting cops. The simple fact is, when in uniform, Police Officers represent authority. They must conduct themselves properly. That doesn't mean they need to take abuse or rudeness with a turned cheek, nor should they give it. The person in question had a bit of an attitude but methinks it was more a lack of patience than manners.
