  • Cannabis oil

Does anyone have any experience using cannabis oil as an external /topical pain reliever? I purchased some balm on a whim at the farmer's market. It smells very nice but I don't know if it's effective because of the cannabis or simply from massaging in the balm. I did Google the subject but wasn't able to find a straight answer on external use. Any opinions?

Well, I hve hung out on a marijuana based message board [GrassCity] and it seems they are also divided on whether or not it works.

I would say that [just like I say about Reiki] if it is seeming to work then just go with it as long as it is not in treating a condition that needs an actual doctor.

      Agreed.

DO make sure you see a doctor if the condition is something that warrants that.

You can do your own "blind trial" if you're careful. Have a friend decant some of the cannibis oil and some of some other massage oil (that smells similar) into identical containers, labelled 'A' and 'B'.
The friend should put which is which into a sealed note, which you don't read until after the trial.

Use A for a month. Record how bad your whatever-it-is is before you start, then every day before the massage, and again an hour after the massage. Come up with your own rating system, just something that works for you.

Leave it for a month or so, with no treatment other than whatever you're using now (ie, before you bought the oil). This should help set things back towards 'starting point'.

Now use B for a month, again recording your condition.

BEFORE you open the envelope, check your records. Check the improvement with each oil: not the absolute result ('before massage is 6 after is 4', is better than 'before massage is 4 after is 3').
Calculate your average improvement with each oil, over the course of the whole month.
Do any other calculation you can think of before you open the envelope.

Choose either A or B as your preferred ongoing massage oil, before opening the envelope.

This is NOT a full-on proper scientific trial: they use a double-blind, medical supervision, and as large a sample size as they can afford/get hold of. The results are calculated by someone skilled in statistics, and interpreted by both medical and mathematical specialists.
But this IS a rough variant of a scientific trial, and Bast, Toth and I all do this sort of thing when we figure it's appropriate.

Reminder: I am not a doctor, nor anyone medical. This is nothing but my guesstimates of what can be helpful to you, in deciding whether or not this is helping you.

      1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

As that I live in a state that has legalized cannabis use for those over the age of 21, I have tried a few topicals to help with my arthritis. While they smell good, (not like cannabis) I have not derived any relief from the several topicals that I have tried. Frankly, I don't even find them to be effective moisturizers.

It's not legal here, so I have no experience. I will tell you that lavender essential oil undiluted works for me--almost instantaneously--if it's muscular pain or skin irritation. (Nerve pain isn't relieved by anything external.)
