This is exactly why I have such a problem with "sales tactics" like this. Without knowing someone relatively well, it's unbelieveably poor judgement to assume they'll have a "normal" reaction to having something chucked at them, or being grabbed by a stranger with no warning.
Having brothers and classmates that would use the automatic catch ability to get something bad out fo their hands and in to mine, to then try and get me in trouble (never did though... mainly because I behaved myself so my parents and the teachers never beleived them) I ahve the tendency... That if something is lobbed at me without my prior knowled...

I jump back, hands up in the air, as far from catching the thing as possible.

Grabbing makes me automaticly scream. I am not used to be touched. A few overly aggresive customers from when I worked at Wannabe Goth Land learned this to the sacrifice of their ear drums. One woman actually flew back startled and knocked herself into and over a clothing display after she'd decided, in a overly crowded store, that grabbing someone and pushing them was the best way to try and get in farther to the mass of bodies.

She left quickly after, not even helping put the display back up, which had toppled onto five other cutomers. THEY helped though. Funiest thing... the b-atch was a normal looking mom-ite... the polite ones that helped me afterwards were Ghetto Superstars Girlfriends. With a little tiny dog in one of their purses and all. Not the type that usually gave a dang. Apparently I lucked out with this group. And they still helped me put all the clothes back on the display. Very nice of them.

I used to be able to catch things out of midair. Then I got knocked out during a high school soccer game by a ball I barely saw coming. I can't control the instinct to slap whatever's coming at me away--and after four years of fencing, I'm FAST with my hands. If that phone had been coming at me, it'd have been knocked out of the air and gone skittering across the hall.

I also can't stand being touched by people that aren't family. Being grabbed from behind (or worse, hugged) makes me panic. I'll elbow, scratch, kick, whatever I have to do to get loose, and I will NOT apologize for it unless it was an honest mistake on their part.

Wow, that scenario has so many good choices of action. Personally my reflex would be to smack it into the ground with considerable force. If something strange from a stranger is flying towards me, instincts say deflect it into the ground. Easily justified.

I can believe the audacity of that salesman, attempting to force a sale onto someone in a very poor manner that only leaves him liable

You know, I'm honestly kinda sorry I didn't hurl it back at him. But I felt like giving him a veiled threat with my eyes, and a growled comment. It made me feel much better.
