Sorry not a bank....

I am fed up with people coming in just to get us to break $20's, $50's, and $100's. I have started telling them sorry I can't break it. If they push the issue I tell them that we are not a bank.

Two guys came in saturday, one asked me to break a $20. I said sorry I couldn't do it. The guy right behind him asks for a pack of smokes, and I tell him the price, he hands me a $5 and I start counting out the change. He asks me to break a $20 for him. I tell him sorry can not do that. He goes to take the $5 back and says then use the $20 to pay for the smokes. I picked up the $5 before him and said nope. Handed him his change and closed my drawer.

A week or so ago a guy came in and wanted me to break a $100, I told him I couldnt as I had just dropped most of my cash. He grabs a pack of $0.30 gum and hands it and the $100 to me. I just looked at him and asked what part of I cant give change for that didn't he understand?

The funniest change story I have heard/seen was what an old co-worker did to a customer. This guy would come in late at night and get anywhere from $5 to $20 in gas and always paid with a $100.

OCW told him over and over again that he didnt carry change for big bills late at night. This guy wouldnt listen, so OCW finally got even, guy came in and got $5 in gas and handed over a $100. OCW came inside, grabbed $95 in $1's and went ouside. He came in and said the guy told him he didnt want that many $1's and OCW told him thats good because he had told him many times that he couldnt give change for a $100 that late and that now on when he paid with a $100 he would get all $1's back. The guy said thats bullshit and he would never come back. To this day the guy has not been back.

My store can make change for big bills but I cant stand when they get their change or cash back and wait till I close the till before asking me to break it. You knew you were getting a $20 before you even walked in the store or at lest while you were punching it all in. How hard is it to open your mouth then and ask not wait till Im already helping the person behind you! And stop asking if $20 is all you can get! I cant override the machince! It gives you three options $5, $10, $20. take a hint!

Sorry, I gotta call slight suck on your part here. Not breaking a 20 without a purchase is one thing (we didn't make change at the record store, either), but it's not really your place to decide for him how he wants to pay. A 20 is not an unreasonable bill to make change for, even for a purchase of a few dollars. Unless there was a mitigating circumstance such as you physically not having the change, or suspecting a potential short-change artist, you should have let him pay with the 20.

I assume had he not initially asked to break the 20 and simply paid with it you would have tendered the transaction as normal (barring not having the change on hand, of course). Not doing so after the request just seems a bit spiteful.

20's, maybe sucky, but if you're low on change, i can feel that; 100's? hell no, take your sorry ass to the bank.

I was low on $5's and $10's because the owners dad runs the store on the weekends and he doesnt believe in giving us "extra" money for the till. We are always begging customers to sell us $1's, $5's, and $10's.

I would say 99% of the people that ask us to make change do it to get a $5 to pay their drug dealer.

I've never understood why people insist on buying $1 worth of something with a $100 bill. It makes it clear that they don't want a $100 and just want change. So why not just tell the bank you don't want $100's??

When I was still working at Macy's, we'd occasionally get a customer wanting us to break a large bill for them........fortunately we were told to direct those people up to gift wrap/customer service to get change.

I have to play devil's advocate here. When I worked at the gas station, our till started with only a few 10s, 5s, and 1s and change.

It never failed, the first 10 or so customers would all get something like a soda, gum, a pack of smokes, something under $10 or $5 and ALL pay with 20s. Within that small rush of customers, there'd be no 10s left and few 5s remaining. Small purchases paid with by 20s can easily wipe out a fresh drawer.
