Hard to believe
Jeez.
I noticed that a friend of mine was on Skype, so I started a chat with him. He then called me, and we were discussing various things. I could hear some background noise, so I knew he wasn't at home - evidently, he was in a bar; I'm not sure.
So. Someone near him piped up: "Would you mind taking that someplace else? Nobody wants to hear you talking. I'm the only one who will say it. Nobody wants to hear your inane conversations about your family or your life or..."
My friend said to me, "I gotta go."
"Okay, talk to you -"
Click.
I'm trying to imagine what's going on there right now. My God - if you don't want to hear someone's conversation, either move or ask politely if the person can take it somewhere else, unless it's hugely loud and/or abusive, in which case you should call the cops.

Jeez, what a jerk. It's a bar, you're gonna hear people talk about inane things. Get over it.

Actually... I have to agree with the Jerk. He's right, no one wants to hear a one sided conversation in a bar.
Of course I feel the same way about my living room. If you're going to have a prolonged conversation in my living room, please either take it to your room or to another. I'm a nosy person who enjoys meddling in the affairs of others. Stop tempting me!

Hey, EQ, does that include the one-sided arguments with the toaster?

Considering how much we normally complain about cellphones in various settings on these boards I find this post quite ironic to be honest.

It's not meant to be ironic. As my friend pointed out, the guy would still be able to hear him talking if he were having a conversation with someone who was physically there. The talk would be exactly the same. And the venue was not a library, a hospital, or any other place where you wouldn't be expected to carry on a conversation. It was a bar. Bars are noisy places. People talk in them. Sometimes they talk to themselves. I, for one, would rather hear one side of a person's conversation with another person, than one side of a person's conversation with the voices in his head.

Okay, now to request that someone please not carry on a cell phone conversation is one thing, but the way this asshat worded it was rude. He could've just left it at, "Would you mind taking that somewhere else, please?"
The fact that the setting was a bar baffles me. Its a bar for crying out loud. If it were a nice quiet restaurant, library, or shoppe, I could understand, but a bar? What would the difference be between your friend talking on the phone to you and if you were sitting right there having your conversation in person?
The person making the request was rude about it, which is uncalled for.
