Default I Need to Apologize...

...to all my guildmates in WoW and Warhammer.

I haven't been on much (Okay, truthfully? at all.) the last few weeks. I just can't get the interest up. I've been devoting my leisure time to console games--Valkyria Cronicles and Fallout 3 mostly, although Call of Duty: World at War is glinting over at the table, full of the promise of more nights spent gleefully sniping more trigger-happy players from a dark corner.

So I've been sitting here at my IT desk, during a gloriously slow call day, wondering why I haven't been interested in my old game haunts and guilds. All I can come up with is this: MMORPG's just don't have any real, rewarding feeling to them. I'm tired of spending hours killing mobile toe fungus to find some NPC twat's magical cockring, only to have him recommend me to his buddy who needs me to go kill fifteen rabid hamsters to get enough magical hamster dung to clear his colon bockage, or whatever you need magical dung for.

I don't have the mass blocks of freetime (or patience) needed to gather a group and go on raids. I don't feel like I'm accomplishing anything in the game other than leveling. Hell, I just cleared a very difficult battle in Valkyria Cronicles and felt more accomplishment than I've felt in a long time. In Fallout 3, I actually spend time wondering what the story is behind the two skelletons embracing the assault rifle that I found hidden away in an abandoned corner of the subway. Or why was Lug Nut willing to kill over a peice of sexy nightwear? I don't have those kinds of mental seagues in online MMO's right now.

And because of the nature of MMO's, nothing I do will fundamentally change how the game reacts to me. There is no reward to look forward to, other than a few silver and a new doohicky that may-or-may-not be of use to me. Especially aggrivating when, for most quests, the scariest monster is the respawn rate which might pop that orc from the BackD'or Clan back to life behind you while you chuck fireballs at his brother's head.

So to those I've been gaming with: Sorry I haven't been on. Maybe this is just a phase I'm going through, and I'll be back more often after I've saved Gallia from the Empire's Invasion and the DC wastland from itself. Maybe not. We'll see.
