Man in the Moon

I hope JoiTheArtist doesn't mind me borrowing her moon picture...? ...

Can anyone explain to me the "man in the moon"? There's supposed to be a face. Everyone's supposed to be able to see it. I don't see it. Never have.

Using Joi's excellent moon picture, here is the only "face" I see, and I doubt this is it. Anyone want to let me in on where the face is "meant" to be?

Just stare at it for a moment. Seeing it IRL is much easier to see the face, then up close pics like the one your showing.


Starting from the RIGHT, you see the dotted line going down? Look to left. That dark spot? Thats is left eye. There is a white line there, thats it nose. The dark spot next to it, its other eye. The dark splat on the bottom is its mouth.

Its best to think of it as a bald old man, wrinkled with age and leaning his head slightly sideways.. He sighs with happines, as he see his young granddaughter run and play in the playground, and meet her best friend, who will eventally marry her.

Thanks for the attempt, but there's no orange moon there and I don't see a "dotted line" on any of the ones showing....

It can't be close up. It has to be seen like it was taken from Earth. It easier to point out, no-one sees it up close cause it no longer the illusion.

So um ... it's entirely the bit between those two large craters? I kinda thought it was supposed to take up the whole moon, as if the whole thing were the head. I guess I can sort of see an old man there, but the dark splot directly beneath the white line would be the nose and the dark blob below the sort of slack-jaw that you see in 'old man' cartoons (think Mr Magoo).

This is also in profile, so probably not what you're describing. Any chance of a penmanship overline like the OP example, or like this?
