Default Mom/kid bond, or just coincidence?

Some of you who are on my FB page may know, my son totalled my car yesterday. He wasn't seriously hurt, and neither were any of his passengers, thank God.

Here's the weird part.

I've been working 3rd shift and had clocked out at 8am yesterday. I didn't go to bed until about 1130a, so I figured I'd try to sleep till around 6p or so.

I have a cell phone that is my home phone too. When I'm sleeping, I put it on silent rather than turn it off. This allows me to see the missed calls when I wake up, and decide who to call back and how quickly.

I suddenly woke up from a dead sleep at around 515pm. I automatically glanced at the phone to look at the time, and the phone was ringing (on silent). And it was my kid...calling about totalling the car. He was crying and there ambulance noises in the background, etc. Pretty unsettling to say the least.

It didn't occur to me until later how spooky it was that I woke up at the exact instant that he called me.

Spooky? Or coincidence?

On the coincidence side, I am a TERRIBLE sleeper. I tend to only sleep 5-6 hours a night and I wake up at least twice during that time.

Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but the timing of it just seems awfully strange.

I would definitely say it was your subconscious telling you to wake up 'cuz something was wrong, but that's just me. Stuff like that happens in my family all the time, particularly with my mom and I. It's like we have some kind of 6th sense that tells us stuff that most other people don't know about yet.

Sorry that the car got totaled, but glad that everyone is okay!

I think more or less maternal instincts in this case.

Well, the phones I know flash the display on silent, not enough to wake me but perhaps enough to wake a light sleeper?
I'd still vote instinct though, I have experienced such things myself.
Good thing no one got seriously hurt.

I have to agree, it probably is that family connection kicking in.

Uh. Yeah. I'm going to go with the flashing light hypothesis.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Forgot to mention I wear a sleep mask during the day, because my blinds and curtains in the bedroom don't block the light. A must for a 3rd shifter.

So much for the flashing light theory...but coincidence is still on the table.

Maternal instincts, he was upset, and telling you, as the phone is ringing "Mom, wake up, i need you, please please ohmigod mom"

We've all done it, call someone, and tell the ringing pickuppickup, answer the phone!

maybe you were already getting to a lighter sleep level anyway, and the buzz of the phone against the nightstand is what pushed you awake? but mostly i'm gonna go with instincts.

echoing the sentiments that it sucks for the car, but glad everybody walked away.
