Default Awkward Conversation

This is more just an awkward wtf moment.

I used to work in a movie theater, one day im working concessions and this woman comes up to my till and orders, while im getting popcorn she asked if the floor is raised on the other side of the counter. This would be an odd question but i am 6'8", i say "no im just tall". While im ringing her up she asks" how tall?" i answer. she goes "oh? my son is around that height, he was hit by a truck." she just walks away. WTF!

Well I guess he's not that tall anymore then.

.......

Okay, that was a horrible comment and I apologize. Just...what are you supposed to say to something like that?

"Huh."

or

"I like marmalade."

No, but seriously, the SC must be one of those types that have to say everything that comes to mind, pertinent or not.

I fail to see the correlation between height and getting hit by a truck. Probably not his height that made a difference, but the intelligence passed down through the gene pool.

Sounds like her brain to mouth filter malfunctioned. Or that your height just reminded her of her son and that's when the filter took a dive and she went into the WTF category.

The correct response would have been: "Well then, he should have jumped."

( Yes, I am a terrible person. )

Hopefully, she was not just addle-minded.

But, it could be something worse, like "Oh, my son used to be that tall [but he died when] he was hit by a truck." Like I can now say "My son used to be red-haired, but he died of an overdose." Grief can make you say and do things that the rest of you find incoherent.

My example is true - my son died of an overdose three months ago, and I find that I am doing and saying things that don't make sense to anyone else. So I have to take a different point of view on this. Cut this lady some slack, her situation may be similar to mine.
