Tag-teamed
I got tag-teamed by two idiots today.
We have a minimum order for delivery. We need orders in before noon. We don't delivery back orders (what was missing the week before). We have weight limits on our trucks. We're busy.
I was passed a call by an aggravated person this afternoon - well, her and her husband. She'd been trying to get hold of a certain person in the sales team time and again. Turned out that he had been trying to see if their order could go on the truck to North London.
They'd phoned in with their order at 3:30pm. Strike one.
The truck was at its weight limit. "But it's only a small amount!" Strike two.
It was below minimum. Strike three.
They wanted it because they had not received all their order the week before. That's a back order. Strike four.
After twenty minutes of me trying to explain to them that we couldn't and wouldn't help them this week, and next week would rely on the good will of the driver and his delivery route, them swapping between husband and wife and me explaining it time and again to both of them, and that they would have to phone in on Thursday to see if something could be done for them, the sales team heard a frantically waving sheet of paper.
"Please kill me," it read. I was holding it.
I've got next week off. Yay!

Is that the proper method for securing a week off? No WONDER...
I had a similar call the other day - husband talking to wife, then to me, wife interjecting meaninglessly (but somehow very loudly) from time to time, and the upshot of it all was that it took about 7 minutes to answer a 7-second question. It's enough to make you want to chew your own leg off...

If you wave a sheet of paper asking for the next week off, do they kill you instead?

Some places will take the remainder the week after when they're passing. However, we tend to take the view that we're not always 'just passing', especially when there are huge doglegs on some routes to get to some of the more out-of-the way routes. It's bad for carbon emissions, and it's very bad for money/time - our drivers are usually on a very tight schedule. It's a sales gimmick for some companies, saying that they have excellent service.

I don't quite understand that either. If something is left out of an order, that's just too bad and they can never get it at all, or only if they order something else to make it big enough to bother with or else a driver is feeling generous? Unless it's the customer's fault they didn't recieve their complete order the first time, that's beyond strange.

We have that system at work. If something is out of stock with our supplier and we do not get it, we have to reorder it. They don't assume to put it on the next available delivery. This stops us from double, or even triple, ordering something and ending up with vast amounts of stock we won't use. It also has made sure we always keep at least our minimum stock. It's a good system and works for us.
