Default Car people, to me!!

So some of you may remember the ol which car debacle I had a while ago.
Well I've since become the proud owner of a 1996 Toyota Sprinter SE Vintage (Which keeps getting called an XE vintage by google).

It has no band expander in it, so I can't get any NZ radio stations. I brought a new Head unit to replace the old one, and for the life of me cannot find any guides how to's or info on how to remove the old radio so I can install the shiny I have theories, but I don't want to inadvertantly find the spontaneous explody button.

I may have to give in and take it to professionals... but I don't wanna spend 80 dollars more to do so.

So, can anyone help?

I'd love to hear this as well since I need to replace my head unit but for more valid reasons (I own a 94/95 (depending on who you talk to) Ford Laser Station wagon). My air-con is a bit funny aso my dad tried to replace the air-con switch. Of course, when he did so, he accidentally tripped the anti-theft system when he was trying to remove my radio. So now I can't play radio.

Fireheart - You should be able to get a Ford (Licensed? Specified? Specialist?) Mechanic to re-code the stereo for you.
It's me - Thanks for the link, I'll try check it out tonight.

Chances are it'll cost around $180 or so for me to get it re-coded. Which is about the cost of a new CD player.

Dad and I put a tape deck in the '91 Toyota Tercel I once owned. My car didn't come with a radio at all Anyway, if it's anything like that car, getting the radio in there is a pain--there are several hidden fasteners. But, once that's done, the radio (IIRC) should be held in by a few screws--two on each side. Remove these, and it should slide right out. Also, depending on where you buy your new source of entertainment, they might even have a wiring harness for it. Plug it in, and you should be good to go.

BTW, before doing *anything* disconnect the battery first!

One more thing, make sure that your current speakers can handle the new stereo's output. Otherwise, you risk blowing them out.

Protoge - Thanks for the tips.

At this point I may bite the bullet and get pro's to do it. I also want cables run to the back, as this car only has front speakers, and thats something I know I won't have the patience to do.

As the research (and tips from here) show me the reality of whats involved, I'm preferring not risking blowing up my new shiny or car.

While I like tackling new stuff and learning, I'm also (glad I'm) able to admit when its above me. I shall ponder this further
