Because the eclipse wasn't a total eclipse, but an annular one, the moon was slightly smaller than the sun, so from specific positions the sun looked like a true ring of fire.

substitute the earth in the image with the moon and now it makes sense why there's such a big ring around the moon - looks like we were in the "antumbra" section for the eclipse
