  • What should I do in Chicago?

Headed up at the end of the week to visit family in Chicago. We're already planning on doing the Field Museum for a day, and we'll save the aquarium and the Art Institute for future trips when we can give them appropriate time. We'll be staying in Evanston, near Northwestern University. I'd like advice on good restaurants, preferably locally owned and not chains, and on theater and music events in the city. The broadway-style shows I searched for just weren't satisfying, so I want to know what community theater and inidie bands that people know about are happening. I do know that there is a concert in the park on Saturday night we're going to, but Mrs. Salesmonkey hasn't updated me on anything more than this.
    Thanks in advance!

If you have any interest in baseball, you should absolutely take in a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. It is on my bucket list, and I will do that one day.

Also, get yourself a Chicago dog. Absolute heaven.

For specifics, I am afraid I can't offer much, as I have not been to Chicago since '99.

Yet another thread with Chicago advice from the Get Togethers forum: http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...ad.php?t=86576 I personally gave a lot of input there.

In Evanston, there's a fun book store called Market Fresh Books. If you're on the CTA purple line, get off at the Davis stop. That will put you in the heart of downtown Evanston. There are a ton of local shops and restaurants there. You can also hop back on the purple line and go South a couple of stops to Main. You'll find what's known as "The Shops At Main" which is a cool pocket of local shops and restaurants including a fun Irish Woolen store (can't think of the name) and a shop of all kinds of fair trade merchandise from around the world called Ten Thousand Villages.

I'll check around about what's going on musically. What dates are you arriving/leaving? I don't know if I'll have anything with the acts I know, but I'll check.

Here's the link to the League of Chicago Theaters website. http://www.chicagoplays.com/Chicago is THE theater city in the Midwest. There's about a metric ton of shows going on right now, with a range of ticket prices to please everybody. You can also search by date to see what's going to be running while you're here. We also have Hot Tix, so you can get same day tickets for up to 50% off.

I was there last summer. If you can, drive up to Gurnee (about an hour) for Six Flags. Totally worth it if you have the time.

DT Chicago: a restaurant called "The Purple Pig". A bit spendy, but totally worth it as well. Be a little adventurous on the menu. You'll be pleasantly surprised on some of the things.

Want to try Charlie Trotter's cuisine but don't have the budget for his restaurant (which is closing permanently August this year... )...? he has Trotter's To Go nearby. The Salted Caramel and Chocolate bread pudding was about $7 and to frickin' die for!

Walk along Lake Michigan. It almost feels like being on a beach on the ocean!

pic I took when we were there:

Six flags I would definitely give a whirl. Also see if you can go to the Aquarium. They got penguins and dolphins

              I was told there's a Jazz/b\Blues museum there too.

Lou Malnotti's Pizza. Deep dish pie thing and it's a Chicago staple. South Side of chicago for the blues music.
