  • I'm going to Austin Comic Con this weekend

    Anyone else going?

First convention I went to was 20 years ago, where Shatner and Nimoy made an appearance (funny thing, a guy kept on trying to get on stage and Shatner kept on pushing his head down to keep him off stage) but that was in HOuston. Having attended other events in convention centers, I never see a place more than 1/2 full.

Austin hopefully won't be so full you ca't walk. Also, I hate when people go into the auditorium and never leave just to get a seat, even if they don't want to see the first few panelists.

I'm going with a friend, who might wear his Star Trek Red Shirt. We are gong Sat. to see the TNG crew. The site is vague about if we pay extra to see them. I'm used to paying general admission and sitting far from the panelists, but for all I know now you pay general admission, but pay extra to see the panelists. I sent an email about this to Comic Con:

I only get to see the cast from ST:TNG if I buy the VIP package (which I understand comes with autographs and pics and other cooool stuff) or with general admission can I see them anyway, but not with the VIP perks. Thanks.

answer: Without the package you would have to purchase each autograph or photo op individually, but you do not have to purchase the package.

I didn't think I was vague, maybe I was? So hoping I don't pay extra just to see them.

I was strongly thinking of going but it turns out some friends of ours are getting married this weekend, and their wedding takes precedence...even over seeing the TNG crew.

I do not think you'll have to pay extra to see the panels, but as you mentioned, there will be people who go in right away in the morning to get a seat and camp there all day, even if they don't want to see the early panelists. (Some conventions don't allow this by kicking everyone out of the room between panels, so that people have to re-line up to get into the next panel. Not sure how it's done at this con, though.) Also most panel rooms have a size capacity and once it's reached, the con staff will not let anyone else in for fire hazard reasons. So line up early or you may not get in at all.

I would not bank on it not being packed. It will probably be shoulder-to-shoulder, wall-to-wall people. When I was at the Dallas Sci-Fi Expo in February, it was over 1/2 full and they "just" had some of the cast of Firefly there; for the Dallas Comic-Con in March, Patrick Stewart was a guest and the building was completely packed and autograph lines to see him were 4+ hours long. Wizard World Austin is the first time the main TNG cast will be together since the show ended, not to mention all the other guests they are hosting...it is going to be packed. But, Wizard World is also a huge organization and has been doing this for a while, so hopefully they have their stuff together, got a big enough location, and will have enough staff and security to keep people moving.

I hope you have fun and get to see everyone you want to see! Let us know how it was when you get back.

I was just teasing, no worries. A drive to Austin isn't in the budget this year. But, maybe I'll be able to go to the Dallas one next year. Have fun.

We almost went, but Austin Comic con wasn't in the stars this year. We went camping at Texas Renn Faire instead.

As usual, nothing went like we thought it would.

First, Fri. I wake up to open the gate and the key doesn't work in the lock. I try a second key, no go. Used WD-40, no go. It was colder Fri. then Thur., but I doubt it was the change in weather that messed it up. I called a locksmith but his phone was disconnected. So I started to file threw a link with a saw whose purpose in life is to cut wood. Though I was able to cut through the link. But I would need to cut it again so I could take out a section so the lock or another link can slip out.

Sat. I hooked up my truck to the chain (since I didn't have time to cut it a second time) and was able to break the chain.

Went to my friends house and he's still asleep.

We finally hit the road and get to Austin at 3pm.

We find out the tickets we get are general admision but not to see the ST:TNG reunion.

I sent an email asking if we can see the cast of TNG and they didn't really answe my question. I should have sent a second email or asked my friend to send an email.

So no tickets are left for the panel. My friend though had checked ComicCon site maybe Thur (I bought tickets last Sat) and there was something about $45 tickets to see cast of TNG but seems those tickets were for rows 1-5, so it was vague about having to buy seperate tickets to see the cast in a panel.

The area where all the booths with people selling stuff wasn't very full, though there was a lot people in costumes. And there was a seperate area where you stand in line for authographs and a closed-off area to take pics with people. So we were able to see the cast signing autographs. Michael Dorn had the smallest line. Patrick Stewart had the biggest line.

I finally go the nerve to take pics in that area (you not suppose to) but this was after the cast left, so I got pics of Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus.

And I got art from SW and Buffy. And a T-shirt-more about that latter

The plan after the convention was to go home to Houston but my friend thought it was a waste of a trip to Austin if we didn't go out to drink around 6th street. Gah, I don't drink. MOron decided to get a hotel then go out for drinks at 8. None of the bars with bands are open until 9. Good thing was a lot of people were in costume (lot of people from the convention, but also it's the Sat. before Halloween). If you are wondering what are the populat costumes, it's Black Widow and Hawkeye. At least 5 couples dressed like them. Next popular were people dressed like the other Avengers.

And of course since I was counting on coming home the same day, I packed nothing (learned my lesson) so had to sleep in the shirt I bought at ComicCon. It has a cat on it, wanting her belly rubbed, and starts with "Soft kitt, warm kitty, little ball of fur..." who wants to finish it?
