Namely, my little niece, who I will call Sweetie (because she is)
Sweetie was born prematurely and it took her a while to catch up, size-wise. She has always had a lot of coughs / colds / chest infections, and the family hoped it was just that her lungs maybe hadn't had a chance to fully mature before she was born. However, it turns out that her immune system doesn't function properly. At six, she already has scarring on her lungs from all the infections.
She's been in and out of hospital, and a few weeks ago she was fitted with a PortaCath, to make it easier for antibiotics to be administered when she needs them. It's likely that she will need a monthly infusion of antibodies too, for the rest of her life. And she puts up with it all without a murmur. The only thing she worries about is whether or not she will have to miss any dancing classes.
She had her first ballet exam last week. She got a Merit!
