  • She was just having a bad day.

So I was working on self scan today, and dealing with all the regular problems people tend to have (can't get their things scanned in, swiping their credit card in the gift card spot, etc.)

Then about half way through my shift, a woman comes through, and she runs in to every imaginable problem. Every step of the way she needed my to do something to help her along.

So we eventually get her scanned in and paid, and as she starts walking away, I look at her hands; she was still holding the scanner. Now I'm in a predicament: how do I delicately tell her to put the scanner back, without coming across as condescending?

So I ask her "Sorry, but before you leave, would you mind if I take the scanner back?" She looked down at her hands and started laughing and said she'd had a rough day.

Honestly, if she hadn't been so nice throughout the transaction, I wouldn't have said anything just so I could have had a laugh when the cord ran out and she literally got pulled back.
Working...
